HAVE YOUR SAY ON A PLACE NAME IN WOLLONDILLY SHIRE COUNCIL

NSW Department of Customer Service < 1 mins read

The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Wollondilly Shire Council to name a reserve in the suburb of Warragamba as Dam Builders Reserve.

The name Dam Builders Reserve commemorates workers involved in the construction of Warragamba Dam which also founded the township of Warragamba.

The dam is Sydney's primary water source and one of the world’s largest domestic water supplies which took 1800 workers 12 years to complete. The reserve is located on the corner of Fifth Street, Third Street and Second Street, Warragamba, Wollondilly Local Government Area (LGA).

The GNB encourages community comment before it considers the proposal to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name.

Suggestions for alternative names is not being sought at this time. Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board’s website.

Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.

The closing date for submissions is 9 July 2023.

Quotes to be attributed to Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood:

“It is important place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community.”

“We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name.”
