Media alert: Recharging the Northern Rivers – saving the region $109 million in fuel costs

Solar Citizens 2 mins read

What: Launch of report into potential cost savings for Northern Rivers residents due to more efficient vehicles, plus the first electric ute in Australia on display

When: Thursday 25 May, 5.30-7.30pm

Where: Blue Fattoria, 1014 Kyogle Road, Fernside

With fuel prices soaring and regional Australians hit hardest, Solar Citizens has commissioned a report showing the $109 million in savings that a strong Fuel Efficiency Standard could bring to the Northern Rivers community by delivering more fuel-efficient cars to the region.

Join Solar Citizens and Farmers for Climate Action to welcome the report, and discuss how strong Fuel Efficiency Standards can bring Australia the choices in efficient cars the US and EU enjoy.

Farmers for Climate Action farmer and Clarence Network Coordinator Peter Lake says: “As a farmer, I am really excited about electric vehicles and their potential to have a really positive impact on the ag sector. There are so many benefits, whether it be cost savings, having quieter vehicles that won’t spook the cows or lowering our emissions.

“That’s why I’m excited about our upcoming event in Lismore, where I can finally check out an electric ute, meet some like minded farmers and have a chat with experts about the exciting developments that are coming. I would love to see lots of other locals there – it will be a really interesting event.”

One of Australia’s first electric utes will be on display at the launch. The electric ute is touring regional Australia on the Electric Ute Roadshow to showcase the cost savings and other benefits electric vehicles can bring to the regions.

About the Electric Ute Roadshow

Regional Australians shouldn’t have to pay the price at the petrol pump and miss out on the opportunities of electric vehicles while the cities speed ahead. The Electric Ute Roadshow will highlight how sensible transport policies like Fuel Efficiency Standards will give people the choice of more efficient, affordable and diverse models that are suitable for the regions—including the much-loved Aussie tradition of utes— and reveal the cost-savings and other benefits electric vehicles bring to the regions.

Are Biosolids and Compost a Source of PFAS Pollution in the Belabula River?

In early 2024, farmers living in proximity to the Belabula River in New South Wales (part of the Lachlan River catchment inWiradyuricountry), reported foam containing PFAS along a stretch of the river. Local residents collected samples of the foam and subsequent analysis found that the foam was detected at 1800 times the safe drinking water limit and 4000 times the 99% ecological trigger level. The pollution was reported by the ABC in August 2024 with the NSW EPA starting an investigation a few months earlier. The pollution is a major environmental headache. Could the same scenario occur in other rivers…

AI supercharges smart irrigation for farms

A smart irrigation system powered by artificial intelligence will tell sugarcane farmers when and where to water their crops in an advance that could one day revolutionise agriculture – and help preserve the health of the Great Barrier Reef. Developed by Victoria’s La Trobe University for far-north Queensland ag-tech company Aglantis, the intelligent irrigation system uses the Internet of Things to automate water pump management and monitor sunlight, temperature and humidity levels without human interaction. The system was initially conceived as a project to improve land management and prevent fertiliser run-off from farms into the Great Barrier Reef, but with…
