New roles to make a difference in Lithgow area schools.

NSW Department of Education 2 mins read

17 public schools across the Lithgow area are recruiting staff with administration, computer and communication skills to help our teachers spend more time teaching and less time on administrative tasks.

Full and part-time roles are now available in many local schools as part of the School Administration Improvement Program.

Roles available include:

•            School Administrative Officer

•            School Learning Support Officer

•            Aboriginal Education Officer

•            Community Liaison Officer

These roles provide a range of administrative, financial and wellbeing support to office and classroom activities, such as helping to arrange excursions, liaising with parents, organising events, data entry and building vibrant school communities.

Addressing workload challenges is one of four focus areas of a new Statement of Intent agreed to by the NSW Teachers’ Federation, Public Service Association, and other key partners in May.

As an immediate form of support, the School Administration Improvement Program will be trialled in Terms 3 and 4, with a focus on reducing teacher admin workload.

Staff will receive training and support to ensure they can succeed in their role.

Applications close on 3 July. To apply visit https://iworkfor.nsw.gov.au/

NSW Department of Education Secretary Murat Dizdar said:

“Working in a public school is a great opportunity to make a positive impact on your local young people and be in a job that’s at the heart of your community.

“With family-friendly hours and opportunities for different future pathways, these are perfect roles for parents or carers returning to the workforce, people who want better work-life balance, or those who just love the idea of being back in a vibrant school environment!”

“School Administration and Support Staff are often the friendly face you see first when you visit a school. Now we will be seeing more of them supporting our teachers in the Lithgow area."

Broken university governance needs urgent reform after unprecedented federal intervention

The National Tertiary Education Union has urged the federal government to overhaul Australia’s broken university governance system following an unprecedented intervention by the Education Minister. Jason Clare has referred serious governance concerns at ANU to regulator TEQSA, after staff passed a no-confidence motion in Vice Chancellor Genevieve Bell and Chancellor Julie Bishop over a litany of failings. While the government holds special powers over ANU – due to its foundation in federal law – new national and state legislation is urgently needed to fix governance failures across the rest of the higher education sector. NTEU National President Dr Alison Barnes…

Union scores major win for secure jobs at the University of Melbourne

Casual and fixed-term contract staff at the University of Melbourne will be prioritised for permanent jobs ahead of external applicants in a major win for workers. The National Tertiary Education Union's recent win in the Fair Work Commission will force the university to overhaul its hiring practices and meet its obligations to create real pathways to secure jobs for precariously employed staff. The Commission has found that the university breached its enterprise agreement, negotiated by NTEU and voted up by staff last year,by forcing internal candidates on casual and fixed-term contracts to directly compete against external applicants for permanent roles.…
