Landmark symposium to bring world-leading cancer screening experts to Melbourne

One in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, yet too few of us participate in Australia’s lifesaving cancer screening programs.

The most recent data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows that only 41 percent of eligible Australians screen for bowel cancer, one in two eligible Australians skipped their most recent mammogram, while only 68 percent of those eligible participated in cervical screening.

Looking to overcome these challenges, more than 150 Australian and international screening experts, researchers and policymakers will gather in Melbourne next week on Tuesday 1 August 2023 to discuss the latest evidence and initiatives to promote early cancer detection.

Cancer Screening: Evidence, challenges and solutions, organised by the Public Health Association of Australia, is the first of its kind to be convened in Australia, and will be held at the Melbourne Conference and Exhibition Centre. The symposium will also explore whether there is evidence evidence to support changes to screening programs, or the introduction of new screening technologies.

The event agenda includes discussions on:

  • Cancer screening – where to next?
  • When equity is the goal – initiatives to ensure screening programs activity address outcome disparities.
  • Building timely evidence for screening program changes and new technologies
  • “Are we ready for the future?”

Media are invited to attend online or in-person, and request interviews with presenters.

“Women’s health is not a pilot project”: RACGP on Government decision to prioritise political donations over safety

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) is concerned for patients after the Federal Government ignored expert advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) by allowing pharmacists to prescribe the oral contraceptive pill. RACGP Vice President Dr Ramya Raman said the “lobbyist-led” decision represents a serious failure of health policy that puts women’s health and safety at risk. “Women’s health is not a pilot project. This decision puts politics ahead of patient safety and sends a troubling message to Australian women that expert medical advice can be ignored,” she said. Dr Raman said the decision was particularly disappointing given the…
