A vibrant public art installation inspired by the natural world is coming to the heart of Melbourne. From Friday 28 July 2023, Luminescence: In Our Nature will see eight towering, organically-styled sculptures come to life on the front lawn of the Hellenic Museum, opposite Flagstaff Station.
This impressive collection of tree-like structures will illuminate the area with their moving wing-like petals, which use optical technologies to cast changing, kaleidoscopic patterns of light around their environment at all hours, day and night.
Luminescence: In Our Nature has been created for the Hellenic Museum by Skunk Control, a Melbourne-based collective who are internationally renowned for imaginative installations which explore the space between science and art.
Director Nick Athanasiou and team have worked with the Hellenic Museum to create this whimsical public activation, which is inspired by local biodiversity and the ancient Greek legacy of scientific advancement. It hopes to inspire a profound sense of wonder and respect for the natural world, and highlight the importance of its continued stewardship.
This is the second of three Hellenic Museum projects supported by the Melbourne City Revitalisation Fund, a partnership between the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne to encourage more people to visit, live and work in the inner city.
Luminescence hopes to extend the Hellenic Museum experience outside its walls, creating a free attraction which can be experienced at all hours and encourages visitation to the Flagstaff precinct.
Media and the public are invited to attend the official opening of Luminescence: In Our Nature at 5.30PM Friday 28 July — RSVP below. Formalities will begin at 6PM with Lee Tarlamis MP, Member for South-Eastern Metropolitan to speak on behalf of the State Government.
