Tomorrow’s Nelson Mandela Youth Leadership Summit promises to bring a sense of vision, optimism and joy to the Victorian Parliamentary Chamber.
With the theme “Young People Creating the Positive Leadership the World Needs”. One hundred young leaders from 15 regional and urban schools and universities will gather, informed by Nelson Mandela’s message "I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed towards the sun, one’s feet moving forward."
Students from Greater Shepparton Secondary College and Goulburn Valley Grammar School make up more than half the participants.
They will be uplifted and join in with the singing of Shepparton’s St Paul's Lutheran Church Choir made up of people from D.R. Congo, Burundi and South Sudan who will sing in Kiswahili, Kirundi and English.
The distinguished speakers who will provoke conversation and questions include Melbourne's Lord Mayor Sally Capp AO, Opposition Leader John Pesutto MP, Daniela De Martino MP representing the Premier, the Afghan Australia Initiative, DFAT’s Mason Interlandi, and Tane Hunter, the leader of Future Crunch.
The focus and highlight are the optimistic and visionary voices of youth.

History
The Nelson Mandela Youth Leadership Summit was born in Shepparton 5 years ago. The COVID lockdowns took the Summit online and global with young leaders and speakers spreading from New York to Africa. Young people chose the topics, and they were designed to assist them in growing into leading community players and act on the immediate most pressing challenges.
In 2022, the historic Legislative Assembly Chamber of the Victorian Parliament in Melbourne allowed the young leaders to experience speaking in the chamber used by the Australian Parliament before the construction of Canberra's Houses of Parliament and still in use by the Victorian Parliament. In 2023 we will use the same majestic building to provide a platform for young leaders.
