Shepparton’s Young Leaders and Singers to Lift the Roof off the Victorian Parliament

The Nelson Mandela Youth Leadership Summit 3 mins read

Tomorrow’s Nelson Mandela Youth Leadership Summit promises to bring a sense of vision, optimism and joy to the Victorian Parliamentary Chamber.

With the theme “Young People Creating the Positive Leadership the World Needs”. One hundred young leaders from 15 regional and urban schools and universities will gather, informed by Nelson Mandela’s message "I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed towards the sun, one’s feet moving forward."

Students from Greater Shepparton Secondary College and Goulburn Valley Grammar School make up more than half the participants.

They will be uplifted and join in with the singing of Shepparton’s St Paul's Lutheran Church Choir made up of people from D.R. Congo, Burundi and South Sudan who will sing in Kiswahili, Kirundi and English.

The distinguished speakers who will provoke conversation and questions include Melbourne's Lord Mayor Sally Capp AO, Opposition Leader John Pesutto MP, Daniela De Martino MP representing the Premier, the Afghan Australia Initiative, DFAT’s Mason Interlandi, and Tane Hunter, the leader of Future Crunch.

The focus and highlight are the optimistic and visionary voices of youth.

History

The Nelson Mandela Youth Leadership Summit was born in Shepparton 5 years ago. The COVID lockdowns took the Summit online and global with young leaders and speakers spreading from New York to Africa.  Young people chose the topics, and they were designed to assist them in growing into leading community players and act on the immediate most pressing challenges.

In 2022, the historic Legislative Assembly Chamber of the Victorian Parliament in Melbourne allowed the young leaders to experience speaking in the chamber used by the Australian Parliament before the construction of Canberra's Houses of Parliament and still in use by the Victorian Parliament.  In 2023 we will use the same majestic building to provide a platform for young leaders.

Sustainable Population Australia

Immigration package is unsustainable and misleads the public

Too little too late: immigration tweaks welcome but results will be far from sustainable SPA Media Release, 11th December 2023 Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) says that, while some aspects of the migration reform package are welcome and long overdue, it falls short in reducing migration to a sustainable level. Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil is misleading the Australian people in claiming that these reforms will bring us back to a ‘normal’ and ‘sustainable’ level of population growth, says SPA president Ms Jenny Goldie. “Immigration before the pandemic was in no way sustainable. It was elevated from 2005 by the Howard…

Unions NSW embraces migration reforms, but more must be done

The Government’s new skilled visa framework makes it easier for migrant workers to leave exploitative employers and provides clearer pathways to permanent residency, but to fight exploitation the restriction on hours worked by international students must be lifted, according to Unions NSW.Dependency on employers to maintain migration status has been a primary driver of migrant exploitation, Mark Morey, Secretary of Unions NSW said."Ensuring migrant workers can leave unscrupulous employers is a game changer. We routinely see migrant workers put their physical and mental health at risk because they are terrified that reporting their employers could result in them losing their…

Solutions for Climate Australia

Abatement of fossil fuel pollution is not a ‘goalkeeper’ if the corporate goalkeepers always let pollution through

At the global climate negotiations in Dubai, Australia's Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the so-called ‘abatement’ of climate pollution from burning fossil fuels - coal, gas and oil - was like a ‘goalkeeper’ that was a necessary line of defence to stop climate pollution heating the world. The Minister’s speech came during intense talks to break a deadlock at the COP 28 meeting on a commitment to phase-out fossil fuels. "We were startled by Minister Bowen’s defence of so-called ‘abatement’ of pollution. The reality on the ground is that there are now increasing numbers of frankly bullshit projects…
