CFMEU Reacts to National Cabinet Housing Construction Plan

CFMEU 2 mins read
A joint statement by Julijana Todorovic, co-convener of Labor For Housing & Zach Smith, National Secretary, CFMEU Construction & General Division:

"This National Cabinet announcement on housing is welcome and is to be congratulated.

"The Albanese Government has clearly listened to the CFMEU and Labor For Housing's calls for stronger housing policy and greater investment.

"We're delighted to see the announcement of better planning laws which support inclusionary zoning, so social and affordable housing developments don't get pushed to the fringes of our major cities.

"It is fantastic to see strong rental reforms, particularly no fault evictions, that will make a significant difference to the rights of renters.

"Likewise the focus on urban densification to boost housing in existing centres where there is established infrastructure rather than simply continuing urban sprawl is welcome.

Comments attributable to Julijana Todorovic, co-convener of Labor For Housing:

"Labor for Housing will continue to campaign for intergenerational equality to ensure the gap between the asset class and the non asset class is bridged for the next generations.

Comments attributable to Zach Smith, National Secretary, CFMEU Construction & General Division:

"We welcome today's announcement but we will continue our 'End the Housing Crisis, Tax Super Profits' campaign, as we have growing inequality in this country and a leading cause of that is corporate profit taking - we need a national reckoning on corporate taxation and the union is not afraid to take up that fight.

"Our research has shown us we need to be building 52,600 dwellings each year between now and 2041 to keep up with demand, this will require an investment of $511 billion, or $28 billion per annum.

"An economy- wide super profits tax could raise $260 billion over the next decade and considerably more in the decade after that.
