The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council to name the Country Club Oval in Cootamundra as Bassingthwaighte Park.
The reserve is bound by Hurley Street, Poole Street, Mackay Street and Hemet Crescent. It is a sporting field used by football codes and the community for public recreation and school sporting events.
Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood said feedback is being sought on the proposal to name the reserve Bassingthwaighte Park.
The proposed name commemorates the Bassingthwaighte family who bequeathed the land to council as the home ground of the Cootamundra Rugby Club.
As well as reflecting the history of the donation, the change from Country Club Oval will reduce the potential for confusion for emergency services by providing a clear separation from the Cootamundra Country Club.
Mrs Underwood said the Board is encouraging community comment before it considers the proposal.
“It is important that place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community,” she said.
“We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name.”
GNB is seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name. Suggestions for alternative names is not being sought at this time.
