Monash University is to establish a new pathway school in Malaysia, increasing opportunities for students in the region to access Monash University Malaysia and study at a global top 50 university.
Monash’s wholly-owned university pathway provider, Monash College will establish the new Monash Malaysia Pathway School. The Pathway School is expected to be operational from mid-to-late 2024, initially offering diplomas in Business, Engineering and Information Technology. Monash College has formally submitted the diplomas for approval to the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.
Students who complete the two-year diploma programs will be able to transition into the second-year of an undergraduate degree at Monash University Malaysia. The new diplomas will complement the foundation pathway courses already provided by Monash College's long-time Malaysian partner, Sunway College Malaysia.
“The establishment of Monash Malaysia Pathway School will significantly strengthen our presence in South East Asia, expanding opportunities for students in the region to study at a top 50 global university that is embedded in their own region,” Monash Acting Provost and Senior Vice-President Professor Sharon Pickering said.
“Earlier this year we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Monash University Malaysia, the first foreign university campus to be established in Malaysia, which today now has more than 9,000 students. The new Pathway School will help us to further build on that success.”
Professor Dato’ Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman, Monash University Malaysia’s Chief Executive Officer and President and Pro Vice-Chancellor, said the new Pathway School will expand access for students throughout the region by providing a guaranteed pathway to a world-class, globally connected university education.
“Each Monash University Malaysia student benefits from their connection to a campus that increases student flow across and between Monash University in Australia and its wider global network, including Monash University Indonesia, Monash Suzhou in China, IITB-Monash Research Academy in India and the Prato Centre in Italy,” said Professor Adeeba.
“This venture exemplifies our commitment to achieving global excellence and making education accessible.”
Monash College Chief Executive Jo Mithen said the new Pathway School was a significant milestone.
“I am incredibly proud to see our College contribute to Monash University Malaysia’s living history – the first foreign university in Malaysia, the first fully accredited engineering degrees in Malaysia, and now adding a pathway school to the mix,” said Ms Mithen.
“The new diplomas and future pathway programs will open up more opportunities for students in the region as we continue our core purpose of preparing students for success at Monash University and beyond.”
