National Cabinet meeting: Statement from Everybody’s Home spokesperson Maiy Azize

Everybody's Home < 1 mins read

Statement from Everybody’s Home spokesperson Maiy Azize about today's National Cabinet meeting:

This was a lost opportunity to protect renters from the worst of the housing crisis.

Today's agreement will not end unfair rent increases. Limiting increases to once a year won't change anything for nine out of ten renters across the country, and has still seen rents spiral.

Today's agreement has not given us a concrete plan for no-cause evictions. With no timeline for change and no details on reasonable grounds, we cannot protect renters who are fearful of eviction now.

There are only so many rent increases people can afford to cop, and Everybody's Home will keep pushing for real limits on rent increases. We will keep pushing for a timeline to end no-cause evictions. And we will keep pushing for an end to Australia's huge shortfall in social housing.

Building generic homes is only half of the answer. We need a plan to end the social and affordable housing shortfall - or 640,000 families will remain in severe rental stress.

We have seen that leaders across the country have goodwill and good intentions. Now we need to turn those intentions into action.

Immigration package is unsustainable and misleads the public

Too little too late: immigration tweaks welcome but results will be far from sustainable SPA Media Release, 11th December 2023 Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) says that, while some aspects of the migration reform package are welcome and long overdue, it falls short in reducing migration to a sustainable level. Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil is misleading the Australian people in claiming that these reforms will bring us back to a ‘normal’ and ‘sustainable’ level of population growth, says SPA president Ms Jenny Goldie. “Immigration before the pandemic was in no way sustainable. It was elevated from 2005 by the Howard…

Govt mustn’t use migration as cover for housing crisis

Statement from Everybody’s Home spokesperson Maiy Azize on the federal government’s changes to the migration strategy: “The federal government is using migration as cover for Australia’s housing crisis. The real cause is decades of government policy that has pushed up the cost of housing. “Governments have given handouts to investors, allowed unlimited rent increases, and stopped building homes for the people who need them. “That’s why housing is so unfair, so unequal and so unaffordable. “Overseas migration was low during the pandemic years, and rents went up not down. And even though we have more homes than ever per person,…

Unions NSW embraces migration reforms, but more must be done

The Government’s new skilled visa framework makes it easier for migrant workers to leave exploitative employers and provides clearer pathways to permanent residency, but to fight exploitation the restriction on hours worked by international students must be lifted, according to Unions NSW.Dependency on employers to maintain migration status has been a primary driver of migrant exploitation, Mark Morey, Secretary of Unions NSW said."Ensuring migrant workers can leave unscrupulous employers is a game changer. We routinely see migrant workers put their physical and mental health at risk because they are terrified that reporting their employers could result in them losing their…
