Object Recognition Adds New Dimension To Interactive Touch Tables

Interactive Experiences 2 mins read

Australias first object recognition (OR) touch table has recently been installed at the Wonders of Wynyard Exhibition and Visitor Information Centre, Tasmania. Designed and developed on the Sunshine Coast by Interactive Experiences, an innovative Smart Interactive Table app will be launched and demonstrated by the company at the Something.Tech exhibition in Brisbane, opening on Thursday, 31 August.

The Smart Interactive Table app, as installed at Wynyard, is believed to be the first of its type to be developed in Australia. The unique application features a new human/PC interface enabling physical objects to be placed on a touch table to control media players and operate other digital features. The new experiences created are called ‘phygital’ as they combine physical world objects with digital/human interaction.

Interactive Experiences founder, Kevin Wright, believes that the addition of physical objects to the digital display is an exciting new way to deliver information and other touch table experiences.  "OR on a touch table offers exciting new ways for people to get information in venues and public spaces,” said Kevin Wright. “It works well, especially in finding and sharing information with others. Collaboration around OR tables is a natural environment whether it involves friends, workmates or strangers pursuing common interests. On an OR table objects are placed on a puck, which, when activated, enables people to get stories curated into categories via media players. Twisting the objects changes categories and, with touch gestures, users can then swipe through images and videos and share interesting information with people on any side of the table by sliding the object into position.

Kevin Wright sees opportunities for OR tables in many locations and venues including corporate project collaboration, experiences at wineries, breweries and distilleries, interpretive experiences at museums and galleries, concierge self-service information, visualisation for training doctors and medical staff and scenario planning for defence personnel. There is also potential for delivery of new forms of entertainment and games, maybe even becoming ‘phygital’ replacements of the pub pool table.
