Teacher unions to rally at NSW Premier’s office to demand pay be taken seriously

Independent Education Union NSW/ACT Branch 2 mins read

Date: Thursday 17 August 2023
Time: 4pm
Location: Suite 1/22-24 Regent St, Kogarah NSW 2217

The Independent Education Union of Australia NSW/ACT Branch (IEU) and the NSW Teachers Federation (NSWTF) will unite today for a joint rally outside Premier Chris Minns’ office.

Yesterday, a large number of teachers rallied outside State Education Minister Prue Car’s office in St Mary’s. Today’s rally is expected to exceed yesterday’s numbers as teachers from Catholic systemic schools join their colleagues from public schools to stand united.

Following an insulting teacher pay offer to NSW Government teachers last week, IEU members have been campaigning for the Minns Government to #TakeTeacherPaySeriously.

Almost 3500 emails have been sent to the NSW Premier and Education Minister via the IEU email petition. Members have also been gathering, wearing yellow and holding placards demanding the NSW Government come back to the negotiating table on teacher pay.

“All teachers in NSW will be impacted by this disappointing move from the Government and that is why we are standing shoulder to shoulder with the Teachers Federation today,” Mark Northam, Secretary of the IEUA NSW/ACT Branch, said.

“Teacher shortages remain at crisis point and not starting the process to rebuild the profession is totally unacceptable. School communities across NSW deserve better.

“The time to act is now. The IEU will be maintaining pressure on the Minns Labor Government to urgently revisit the matter of teacher pay and get it right.”

We encourage members and supporters to wear yellow and join us at the Premier’s Office in Kogarah today, Thursday 17 August, at 4pm.

Authorised by Mark Northam, IEUA NSW/ACT Branch Secretary (0427 667 061)

‘Devastating’: UniSQ job losses impact wider community

Job cuts at the University of Southern Queensland will hurt regional communities and increase stress among already anxious staff, the National Tertiary Education Union has warned. UniSQ are refusing to detail exactly how many jobs will be cut in the latest redundancy round to hit the sector. Based on union members' information, 60 jobs have been lost already, with one area set to lose almost 40 per cent of its staff. NTEU UniSQ Branch President Professor Andrea Lamont-Mills said: "These job cuts are devastating for not only the people affected, but colleagues left behind who will inevitably be forced to…

Adapting GenAI for the next generation of learning

A new study by Monash University learning analytics researchers presents key considerations for generative AI (GenAI) educational tools so they are carefully developed to support, rather than replace, human learning. Published today in Nature Human Behaviour, the paper outlined essential factors for researchers, policymakers and technology companies to consider while adapting GenAI to support human learning in all levels of education and workplaces. Key considerations included understanding how to use GenAI to enhance human learning while fostering skills for critical thinking and self-reflection in humans to effectively partner with GenAI. The Centre for Learning Analytics (CoLAM) Director at Monash University’s…
