Tiffiny Hall on daughter Vada having a ‘funny shaped head’ (Plagiocephaly), feeling like she was failing her, and ultimately, bouncing forward

LiSTNR 3 mins read

Renowned fitness instructor, podcaster and author Tiffiny Hall was told not to worry about her daughter's flat head and that she would grow into it.

Tiff’s intuition said otherwise and led to a journey with her daughter being diagnosed with plagiocephaly.

For the first time, Tiffiny opens up about the challenges she faced while navigating this condition, shedding light on the importance of early detection and to always follow your “Mum gut”.

Dr Daniel Golshevsky (Dr Golly) talks to people we all know about their struggles, their children’s health issues and how they have become ‘experts’.

In today’s episode, he speaks with Tiff about her daughter Vada having a ‘funny shaped head’ (Plagiocephaly), feeling like she was failing her, and ultimately, bouncing forward.

Tiff Hall, first graced our screens as a coach on The Biggest Loser. And since then, she's gone on to create her own fitness programs, podcasts. She’s married to TV and radio star Ed Kavalee, and they have two small humans, Arnold (5) ad Vada (13 months.

But it hasn't all been karate, kicks and rainbows.

At three months Vada was diagnosed with plagiocephaly (flat head), and Tiff went on to put her through helmet therapy.

Here’s her story….

9:56 – Tiff talking about her struggles with breastfeeding Vada. “I was carrying a lot of guilt with Vada because I felt guilty that I hadn't succeeded with the breastfeeding like I had with Arnold. And then I felt guilty that I hadn't initiated, you know, the helmet therapy earlier with Vada, and it just all felt yucky. Like, I just felt like I was failing with her.”

25:49 – Once Vada arrived, Tiff decided to no longer show her children’s faces on Instagram which stemmed from a stalker situation years prior involving Tiff, her husband Ed Kavalee and Arnold. “I feel like I made a mistake because I can speak from experience in having Arnold out there for five years, you know, and I feel bad about that.”

39:30 – After having Vada, instead of ‘bouncing back’ to her previous body, Tiff decided to bounce forward instead. “I just said I'm bouncing forward and … lots of women got on board with bouncing forward too.” This bounce forward moto can also be applied to things such as “bouncing forward after divorce or bouncing forward after grief or bouncing forward after, you know, a personal setback at work. So we were all bouncing forward together, which was fantastic.”

LiSTNR’ s DR GOLLY AND THE EXPERTS

It's one thing to study and practice medicine for decades and be able to talk about different conditions. It's another thing entirely to live through the experience personally or as a parent.  In this new LiSTNR original podcast, Dr Golly and the Experts, Dr Daniel Golshevsky (Dr Golly) talks with ‘experts’ -  people and parents who have, through necessity, become a specialist in their child's – or their own - health journey, from diagnosis to day-to-day treatment and beyond. The stories are sometimes painful, often heart-warming and always inspiring and told through the voices and hearts of high-profile Australians as they talk to Dr Golly, a Melbourne-based paediatrician and father of three. Given his unique position as former Chief Resident Medical Officer at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Dr Golly has treated many high-profile Australian families as they deal with medical conditions ranging from epilepsy, autism, eczema, sleep deprivation, croup and ADHD, and he has a rare talent as an expert, and as an expert translator. He’s a pleasure to listen to.

The generous legacy helping thousands of lives

Thanks to generous donations to the Eastern Health Foundation, Box Hill Hospital has received a new PET Scanner. The new PET Scanner will help thousands of people each year, to receive detailed images, crucial in diagnosing and staging various conditions, leading to more targeted and effective treatment. Through a dedicated fundraising campaign, the Eastern Health Foundation made the PET Scanner a reality. One of the biggest contributors to the cause was AmberGooding, who tragically passed from cancer in 2017. The PET Scanner will improve continuity of care and allowing medical professionals to track how patients are responding to therapies and…
