Apprenticeships and Traineeships in the spotlight at prestigious awards

IntoWork Australia 3 mins read

IntoWork Group businesses Work & Training and Mas National are thrilled to be supporting ten trainees, apprentices and host businesses who have been selected as finalists at the Tasmanian Training Awards.

Work & Training’s Tom Morgan, Ella Phillips, Anne-Maree Jeffries, Paige Parker, Darcy Beavan-Duncan, Maryam Azizi and Edward Harper have all been nominated across five categories.

Work & Training trainee Edward Harper was nominated in the Equity Trainee of the Year award. Edward, who lives with Autism, is undergoing a Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations at Water Dynamics with host employer Water Dynamics, “Leaving school was a nervous time for me. I had established routines and the environments were familiar. There were other people with Autism, so I wasn’t alone,” he said.

"Leaving school meant going for job interviews and this was very scary. I had never worked so I didn’t know how to successfully apply for a job. When I did get an interview for the traineeship offered by Work & Training to work at Water Dynamics, I was feeling nervous, this was a whole new experience for me.  My supervisor, Peter from Work & Training helped me to overcome challenges. He made sure that I was feeling supported in my workplace.”

Maryam Azizi was also nominated in the Equity Apprentice or Trainee of the Year category. Maryam is training in a Certificate III in Dental Assisting with host employer Oral Health Services.

Ella Phillips and Anne-Maree Jeffries are both finalists for Trainee of the Year. Ella is training in a Certificate III in Business with Work & Training and is hosted by Ambulance Tasmania, “I chose Work & Training because I knew they were a reputable Group Training and Registered Training Organisation in Tasmania with strong business relationships with other credible organisations. I was fortunate enough to secure a position to undertake my traineeship at Ambulance Tasmania, which has opened many doors for me to continue my professional development,” she said.

Paige Parker was nominated for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year. She is training in a Certificate III in Business with Work & Training and is hosted by Tasman Medical Practice, “Working at the medical practice in a rural community has given me the opportunity to connect with all members of my community. I have also developed strong connections with the elderly members of the community, and this has provided me with valuable life lessons,” she said.

Two businesses which are supported by Mas National as their Australian Apprenticeship Support Network Provider are also in the running. Cataract on Paterson and Temtrol Technologies have been nominated in the Small Employer of the Year Award, while Cataract’s Catherine Jones is also nominated in the Trainee of the Year award category. She was recognised for her commitment to her Certificate III in Hospitality

Winners of the state awards will go through to the Australian Training Awards in November, which will this year be hosted in Tasmania.

Tasmanian Training Awards will be held this Friday, 8 September 2023, at Wrest Point Hobart.
