Calls for reform to rent assistance

Everybody's Home < 1 mins read

National housing campaign Everybody’s Home is calling on the federal government to reform rent assistance as today’s increase is set to be eclipsed by high rents.

From today, the maximum rate of Commonwealth Rent Assistance for singles is increasing by $27.60 to $184.80 a fortnight. The payment for a family with one or two children will increase by $32.34 to $217.28.

Everybody’s Home spokesperson Maiy Azize said rents in many areas have increased by hundreds of dollars a week in the last three years and were set to continue to grow.

“This increase to Commonwealth Rent Assistance is welcome but it will be swallowed by the high cost of rents and further hikes,” Ms Azize said.

“Today’s increase to the payment won’t be enough to lift many renters out of housing stress and many vulnerable people will miss out on the rise entirely.

“As rents have soared since the pandemic, rent assistance has not been keeping pace. On top of this, the payment excludes many of those on the lowest incomes, with two in three people on JobSeeker ineligible.

“Rent assistance needs a major shake up - it must be indexed to better reflect rent paid, and help people who need it the most.

“Reforming the payment will provide immediate relief to renters but the key solution to fixing the rental crisis is building enough social housing to end the huge shortfall.”

Date: Tuesday, 22 July Time: 5pm Register to view:https://webinars.on24.com/latrobeuni/liberal?partnerref=media By general agreement, the performance of the Liberal Party in the May federal election was the worst in the party’s history. Was the poor performance attributable to mistakes made in the campaign and the quality of the Party’s leadership or do the problems go deeper? Was it a mistake for the party to concentrate on the outer suburbs at the expense of the inner metropolitan seats? How well has the party responded to the challenge of the Teal independents? Some supporters of the Liberal Party think that the party has abandoned…

Teachers spend more time on data collection than student support: Survey

Teachers are spending far too much time on data collection and compliance paperwork while being starved of time for activities that directly benefit students, according to a report by the NSW Teachers Federation. The latest analysis of a survey of 13,000 teachers will be launched today at the Teachers Federation conference and reveals educators are spending the majority of their non-teaching time on administrative tasks such as data collection and entry and programming compliance. Meanwhile, work that teachers identify as having the greatest impact on students, such as professional learning, engaging with parents and carers, and collaborating with colleagues on…

Older Australians value super, want it to be even stronger

New research reveals an overwhelming majority of older Australians who experience the benefits of superannuation support the super system and will rely on it heavily in retirement. The findings are from a survey of more than 3000 respondents aged 50 and older by National Seniors Australia (NSA) for the Super Members Council (SMC). The survey found 79% of older Australians see super as ‘very important’ to their retirement. While views on the super system are hugely favourable, older Australians also support efforts to make the system work better for retirees, with 78% wanting the ability to make direct super contributions…
