  • GreenSquareDC™ and Schneider Electric have announced the signing of its MOU, where Schneider Electrics’ technology will be utilised to deliver highly sustainable data centre solutions across GreenSquareDC™’s regional data centre pipeline.

  • The new infrastructure will feature innovative design, aiming to set a new benchmark in sustainable data centres.

  • The partnership will aim to minimise carbon footprint and maximise operational efficiency by meeting four main criteria.

Sydney, Australia, 15 September 2023: GreenSquareDC™ and Schneider Electric, a leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation have today announced a strategic partnership to deliver GreenSquareDC™’s highly sustainable 96MW data centre in Perth that is aimed at leading the industry in sustainability, resilience, and cost efficiency.

With data centres accounting for approximately 4% of Australia’s energy usage each year, GreenSquareDC™ sought to partner with a leader in sustainable transformation to set a new bar for data centre design.

Speaking on the new partnership, Joe Craparotta, Vice President of Data Centres at Schneider Electric said, “As we continue to shift to a more digital and sustainable world, the demand for data centres is rapidly increasing, so it’s important for data centre operators to create sustainability roadmaps that will reduce the environmental impact of these critical assets. We are excited and humbled to be selected by GreenSquareDC™ after their assessment of the market. This exciting new flagship project will allow us to collectively pave the way to a greener, more efficient data centre model.”

The new data centre, named WAi1, will utilise Schneider Electric solutions to both minimise its carbon footprint, while maximising operational efficiency. Being recognised as transformational in design, the infrastructure will meet three main criteria.

  1. Increase resilience: At a minimum, WAi1 will have the same level of resiliency, reliability, and uptime of a traditional sized data centre. Through GreenSquareDC™’s partnership with Schneider Electric, it will meet and aim to exceed these high levels of resiliency.

  2. Set a benchmark for sustainability:  WAi1 has been specifically designed to set a new sustainability standard for the industry. The new design will deliver a considerably lower overall environmental footprint than comparable data centres, with significantly lower embodied carbon, as well as vastly reduced power and water consumption.

  3. Maintain Total Cost of Ownership (TCO): Looking through the lens of GreenSquareDC™ owning and operating the data centre, as well as its customers, the newly designed data centre will have the same, if not lower, TCO as regular data centres. This will be taken over the entire lifecycle of the data centre.

  4. Enable High-Density AI and GPU Solutions: WAi1 will be a hub for innovation, specifically designed to accommodate the growing demand for high-density AI and GPU-based computational needs. Through its partnership with Schneider Electric, GreenSquareDC™ is uniquely positioned to offer scalable and affordable AI GPU-ready Data Centre solutions. This will empower enterprises, partners, and customers at the forefront of technological innovation to not only meet but exceed their industry-specific requirements. Importantly, this is achieved without compromising on our mutual commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility. By integrating cutting-edge cooling and power solutions, we ensure that even the most resource-intensive operations can be conducted with minimal environmental impact.

“Schneider Electric is a natural partner for GreenSquareDC™, and we look forward to working with their expert team to help our sustainability vision for the future come to life. This collaboration marks a significant step in the data centre industry. bringing the highest levels of sustainability and reliability and at a time when it’s needed the most,” added Walt Coulston, Founder & CEO of GreenSquareDC™.

Construction on WAi1 is slated to commence early 2024, with expected completion of the first stage in 2025 with further highly sustainable, AI enabled Data Centres planned across Australia and across the APAC region.

Government’s Future Gas Strategy undermines its own Net Zero Plan

Expanding the gas industry until 2050 and beyond contradicts the government’s own work on a Net Zero Plan and will result in higher energy bills and a devastating increase in greenhouse gas emissions, said Rewiring Australia following the release of the Future Gas Strategy. “The government is walking both sides of the road. It needs to explain if it supports emission reduction and electrification or an endless expansion of dirty, expensive, fossil gas,” said Rewiring Australia Executive Director Dan Cass. “Last week Rewiring Australia made a supportive submission responding to the government's Electricity and Energy Sector Plan, the central plank…

New guide shows how solar farms can improve biodiversity

May 10, 2024 A new guide developed in New England sets out how new solar farm projects can improve biodiversity on the same sites. The Building Better Biodiversity on Solar Farms Guide presents innovative strategies and tools to restore nature and integrate regenerative farming techniques while producing solar energy. “Planning a renewable energy development offers a chance to consider shared land use,” says co-author Heidi McElnea, Regional Coordinator at Community Power Agency. “We know from projects being developed in Europe, the US and now emerging in Australia, that conservation and agriculture don’t need to come off second best to renewable…
