Scholarships to booster aged care workforce

Applications open this week for the latest round of Aged Care Nursing and Allied Health Scholarships.

Australian College of Nursing (ACN) CEO, Adjunct Professor Kylie Ward FACN, said today that these important scholarships are helping to train and retain the skilled workforce needed to meet the needs of the ageing Australian population.

Adjunct Professor Ward said the Aged Care Nursing and Allied Health Scholarships will upskill nurses, personal care workers, and allied health professionals to be part of the aged care workforce to care for older Australians.

“Careers in aged and disability care were in the top three most in-demand occupations according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data released last week,” Adjunct Professor Ward said.

“Healthcare professionals play an integral role in providing high quality care for older people. ACN is proud to administer these scholarships to help build a workforce that can meet the needs of Australia’s aging population.

“There are 400 Aged Care Scholarships for nurses and personal care workers to complete qualifications in 2023.

“And there are up to 100 allied health scholarships per year for allied health professionals to obtain dementia related qualifications.

Of these, there will be a guaranteed minimum number of scholarships available for First Nations applicants.

“Since their inception, we have nearly 1000 nurses and allied health professionals who have or who have had a scholarship to support their work in aged care.”

The final round of these scholarships will open on Wednesday 30 August 2023 and will close on Tuesday 10 October 2023.

ACN administers these scholarships for the Australian Government via the Department of Health and Aged Care.

Recent infection doubles the risk of childhood stroke

New Monash University-led research has for the first time in Australia found that children with an infection in the past 60 days had roughly twice the risk of stroke. Published in Neurology, the study provides the first population-wide estimates on the incidence of childhood stroke in Australia and also tracks risk factors for this rare event. In this study, over a 7-year period in Victoria, 571 childhood strokes occurred, equivalent to one stroke per 18,000 children. While rare, childhood stroke is associated with serious adverse health outcomes, including death and long-term disability. Childhood strokes were more common among boys, particularly…

“Sweep it under the rug”: Whistleblowers allege cover-ups and intimidation at Newcastle’s Calvary Mater Hospital

Allegations that serious risks were downplayed or concealed at the Calvary Mater and that workers who flagged concerns were threatened or pushed out of their roles have been revealed as part of a submission to an inquiry into the hospital’s management. In its submission to the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into management, maintenance and operational issues at the Calvary Mater Hospital, the Health Services Union has included staff reports of a “sweep it under the rug” culture as part of the private maintenance contract which the Novacare consortium is responsible for. After years of failures under the Public Private Partnership model,…
