Aussie invention tops the world

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An Australian Steel Institute (ASI)-nominated invention for propping up structures during construction or maintenance has topped the world at the World Steel Association (WSA) constructsteel Awards 2023.

The project Quadshore: The world-leading lightweight propping solution for temporary construction works was voted Innovation of the Year by the WSA judges.

Led by Monash University and Coates, the project was nominated for the award by the peak body for the Australian steel industry the Australian Steel Institute (ASI). Quadshore 50 (a medium-duty version of Quadshore) is being manufactured by Knox Engineering at Ingleburn in Sydney, who is a member of the ASI.

Quadshore is an innovative lightweight temporary prop for supporting buildings and structures during construction or maintenance. Conventional propping systems, mainly made of low-grade steel, are usually heavy and hard to use.

Quadshore’s revolutionary design uses lightweight, high-strength steel structural elements and boltless connections, making construction sites more efficient and safer while reducing labour, handling, storage, and assembly/disassembly costs.

Associate Professor Amin Heidarpour, a representative of Quadshore’s development team, travelled to Seoul in South Korea last month to receive the award at the WSA constructsteel annual conference. The conference was a platform for the project team to present Quadshore to an audience of industry professionals.

The Australian Steel Institute (ASI) is the peak body for the Australian steel industry, representing

500 companies and 5,000 members. Founding members are BlueScope, InfraBuild, Liberty Primary Steel and Stramit Building Products. Steel generates 100,000 jobs and $29b in annual revenue in Australia.

World Steel Association, abbreviated as worldsteel (ASI is a member), is the international trade body for the iron and steel industry.
