Aussie invention tops the world

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An Australian Steel Institute (ASI)-nominated invention for propping up structures during construction or maintenance has topped the world at the World Steel Association (WSA) constructsteel Awards 2023.

The project Quadshore: The world-leading lightweight propping solution for temporary construction works was voted Innovation of the Year by the WSA judges.

Led by Monash University and Coates, the project was nominated for the award by the peak body for the Australian steel industry the Australian Steel Institute (ASI). Quadshore 50 (a medium-duty version of Quadshore) is being manufactured by Knox Engineering at Ingleburn in Sydney, who is a member of the ASI.

Quadshore is an innovative lightweight temporary prop for supporting buildings and structures during construction or maintenance. Conventional propping systems, mainly made of low-grade steel, are usually heavy and hard to use.

Quadshore’s revolutionary design uses lightweight, high-strength steel structural elements and boltless connections, making construction sites more efficient and safer while reducing labour, handling, storage, and assembly/disassembly costs.

Associate Professor Amin Heidarpour, a representative of Quadshore’s development team, travelled to Seoul in South Korea last month to receive the award at the WSA constructsteel annual conference. The conference was a platform for the project team to present Quadshore to an audience of industry professionals.

The Australian Steel Institute (ASI) is the peak body for the Australian steel industry, representing

500 companies and 5,000 members. Founding members are BlueScope, InfraBuild, Liberty Primary Steel and Stramit Building Products. Steel generates 100,000 jobs and $29b in annual revenue in Australia.

World Steel Association, abbreviated as worldsteel (ASI is a member), is the international trade body for the iron and steel industry.

ACA urges Queensland Government to establish independent Olympic Games Delivery Agency

With the imminent announcement of a new Premier, the Australian Constructors Association (ACA) is urging the Queensland Government to reconsider its approach to delivering the 2032 Olympics. ACA CEO Jon Davies said the decision by the former Premier to establish a coordination office can now be reversed, and an independent Olympic Delivery Authority established to ensure bipartisan political support. “Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will leave a lasting infrastructure legacy from her time in office but any transition to a new Premier provides an opportunity for fresh thinking on how this is delivered,” said Mr Davies. “In particular, the incoming Premier should…

Government delivers tradies a Christmas blow

7 December 2023 Attributable to Master Builders Australia CEO Denita Wawn: In what is starting to feel like Groundhog Day for bad Government process, the Government with the support of some crossbench Senators have decided to ram through aspects of its damaging IR ‘Closing Loopholes’ Bill. Any remaining trust between the business community and the Albanese Government has today been eroded. It is disappointing that Senators David Pocock and Jacqui Lambie did not consult with the industry on any potential amendments before doing this deal. The unions are today celebrating their Christmas gift while tradies and Australians who are grappling…

Major property and construction firms back engineered stone ban

Australia's biggest property and construction companies will ban engineered stone from new developments as part of a landmark agreement with the construction union. The CFMEU's Stop This Killer Stonecampaign now has the support of major companies including Lendlease Australia, John Holland, Mirvac and CBUS Property, retailers like Bunnings, IKEA and Mitre10, and the vast majority of state governments. A Safe Work Australia report recommended a total ban of engineered stone because compliance measures haven't been effective to date. CFMEU National Secretary Zach Smith congratulated the companies for backing the ban. "Some of the biggest property players in Australia are taking…
