FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DATE 30 November, 2023

THE CLIMATE COUNCIL welcomes passage through NSW Parliament of the Net Zero Future Act, confirming support from all parties for positive climate action in Australia’s biggest state.

Dr. Jennifer Rayner, Head of Advocacy at the Climate Council, said: “The Net Zero Future Act confirms the path New South Wales is on to thrive and seize the benefits of a net zero economy.

“By setting a floor for cutting carbon pollution with a ratchet mechanism to strengthen action over time, NSW communities, businesses and investors can move forward with confidence. Clean, cheap electricity from solar and wind is already meeting a growing share of the state’s energy needs and this momentum can now accelerate.”

“The fact that all parties in the NSW Parliament have come together to back this law shows strong consensus on the benefits of cleaner energy, good new jobs and a safer future for communities across the state.

“The NSW Government and all those involved in amending and improving this bill have set a great example for other parliaments to follow on collaborative climate action.

“Working together now to cut carbon pollution and keep communities safe from climate harm is sensible, responsible and economically smart.”

Serious response to youth crime demands serious investment in youth hubs

Youth Action is urging the NSW Government to ensure the 'Operation Soteria' crackdown on youth crime is accompanied by robust investment in youth hubs, which address the root causes of crime by offering practical, proactive support to at-risk young people. Youth hubs, already successfully in limited operation, provide young people with a one-stop shop to access support services and programs. Hubs aim particularly to support young people who have experienced trauma, poverty, or disengagement from education - factors known to drive youth crime. They offer opportunities for young people to gain essential life skills and connections to educational and employment…

100,000 Australians Demand Facts, Not Fear in Nuclear Debate

Nuclear for Australia has announced that over 100,000 Australians have now signed a petition calling for the legalisation of nuclear power, marking a significant shift in public sentiment toward evidence-based energy policy. This milestone reflects growing frustration with Australia's outdated prohibition on nuclear energy while countries worldwide embrace it as a clean, reliable power source. "Australians are tired of distractions and misinformation," said Will Shackel, Founder of Nuclear for Australia. "The rest of the world is moving fast on nuclear, building a cleaner, more reliable energy future, while we're left arguing over outdated fears instead of embracing the facts." The…
