Ukrainian medic and advocate Yulia ‘Taira’ Paievska will receive a hero’s welcome when she addresses HSU paramedic delegates, Health Minister Ryan Park and Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko in Sydney on Wednesday.

“We are incredibly excited and humbled to meet and learn from Taira while she is in Australia,” HSU NSW Secretary Gerard Hayes said.

“She is an international medical hero who has helped save thousands of civilian and soldiers’ lives under absolutely unimaginable circumstances.

“We are committed to continuing to support Ukrainian medics' efforts to deliver vital care under incredibly trying conditions.”

Taira captured Russian atrocities on bodycam so the film could be smuggled out of the country during the 2022 siege of Mariupol and endured three months’ captivity by Russian forces. She received the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, was named among the BBC's 100 Women list and selected as a laureate of the International Women of Courage (IWOC) award.
