Feds must fully fund public schools

The New South Wales Teachers Federation is deeply alarmed at reports the Federal government may fall short of fully funding public schools.

A report in The Australian suggests that while the Albanese Government plans to raise funding for public schools, it will fall short of reaching 100 per cent of the agreed Schooling Resource Standard (SRS).

Acting President of the NSW Teachers Federation, Henry Rajendra, said full funding was urgently needed to reduce class sizes and improve support for students with complex needs.

"In New South Wales, we need an education system that is better and fairer, where each child gets the individual attention and support they need to thrive."

A growing achievement gap has emerged between students based on financial and geographic backgrounds, aggravated by teacher shortages. Rajendra said tackling these challenges starts with adequate funding.

"NSW public schools are funded well below the Schooling Resource Standard (SRS), the minimum level that was agreed upon as necessary for meeting student needs over a decade ago.

“This year alone, the funding shortfall for NSW public schools amounts to $1.9 billion.

“We urge the Prime Minister to work closely with the New South Wales government to ensure full funding for our public schools.

“The stakes are too high for continued failure in funding by the government. The Albanese Government must commit to fully funding all public schools in New South Wales without delay. All kids deserve a decent shot at life."

Schools remain closed due to flooding

More than 80 schools are closed due to flooding in parts of the Mid North Coast, Central Coast and Hunter regions, with adverse weather expected to impact communities further north. Parents and carers have been and will continue to be updated by their schools, which are their first source of advice. Deputy Secretary of Public Schools Deb Summerhayes said the department continues to take a safety-first approach and make decisions with information and advice provided by emergency services. “Please do not send your child to school if it is closed,” she said. “Our communities around Taree, the Great Lakes and…

Liberals strong stand for rational energy policy

Liberals Against Nuclear today congratulated the Liberal Party leadership on taking a principled stand by refusing to cave to the Nationals' demands to lock in nuclear power, resulting in the Coalition's first formal split in 38 years. "This is a crucial moment for the Liberal Party and a very encouraging sign that the party leadership is listening," said Andrew Gregson, spokesperson for Liberals Against Nuclear. "Australian voters sent a clear message at the ballot box – the nuclear policy was economically irresponsible and contrary to Liberal values. We read today's development as a promising indication that the Liberal Party, under…
