Mandating social housing in new developments key to tackling homelessness crisis

Media release | Monday, 4 December 2023

Mandating social housing in new high density developments is key to tackling the homelessness crisis, Homelessness NSW says.

HNSW CEO Dom Rowe says: “We welcome any moves that require social and affordable housing in high density developments near existing transport and services.

“We will not be able to build our way out of the worst homelessness crisis in a generation without ensuring that 10 per cent of dwellings are social housing by 2050.

“There are 57,000 households on the waitlist for social housing and most of them face a decade-long wait to secure a home. This is unacceptable.

“These are women and children who have fled violence, people who are forced to keep reapplying for temporary accommodation, couch surf or left to sleep rough.

“Shortchanging social housing now only leads to overwhelmed community and health services down the track and costs us all more in the long term.

“The mandating of social housing in new high density developments is essential to curbing soaring rents and turning the tide on the homelessness crisis.”
