National peak welcomes appointment of interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner

NATSIAACC < 1 mins read

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ageing and Aged Care Council (NATSIAACC) is pleased to welcome the announcement of Andrea Kelly as interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner.

Ms Kelly is a Warumungu and Larrakia woman with decades of experience working in the interests of better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“The interim Commissioner role is incredibly important,” said Lisa Orcher, CEO of NATSIAACC.

“Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders are the glue within many of our communities, and they have laid the groundwork for much of the progress being made today. But there are many, many barriers that are stopping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from accessing aged care, or from receiving appropriate care if they do manage to achieve access,” said Ms Orcher.

“The interim and ongoing Commissioner roles will play a significant role in identifying and analysing these situations, and seeking solutions,” she said.

“NATSIAACC is supportive of the interim Commissioner and looks forward to working with Ms Kelly to achieve better outcomes,” said Ms Orcher.

NATSIAACC is the peak body representing the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and older people, communities and organisations. It was launched in 2023.

On 22 October the Department of Health and Aged Care advised individual pharmaceutical companies that 44 of the 77 medicine applications due to be considered at the March 2025 meeting of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) would be indefinitely delayed, citing ‘workload and resourcing issues’. The PBAC had held a secret meeting to determine those medicines they would proceed with and those they would not.…

The design and implementation of policies and programs need to be better

The Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit has today tabled its report for theInquiry into Policy and Program Design and Implementation. Committee Chair Linda Burney commented that specific recurring issues identified in the Auditor-General reports included in the inquiry appear to be impacting the effectiveness of government policy and program design, including inadequate stakeholder engagement, a lack of effective performance measures, and deficiencies in the advice to government. Ms Burney stated that ‘ineffective decision-making and a departure from best practice resulted in some common issues across the audits examined by the Committee, even though they involved very different programs’,…
