Ukraine braces for another winter at war

Australia for UNHCR < 1 mins read
Australians are being encouraged to remember the people of Ukraine as winter starts to bite and attacks continue across the country.

“Staying warm is a matter of life and death in Ukraine as temperatures drop below freezing around the country,” Australia for UNHCR CEO, Trudi Mitchell, said.

“While the world has been focused on other crises, the people of Ukraine continue to suffer. They are facing winter in homes with holes in the walls and shattered windows, no heating, and no income. Many are only surviving with the help of the UN Refugee Agency and other humanitarian organisations.”

The United Nations Refugee Agency is providing thermal blankets and winter clothing and helping to repair and insulate damaged homes. UNHCR is also distributing cash for basic items like food.

“UNHCR is hoping to reach an estimated 900,000 people with crucial support this winter, and we need all the support we can get,” said Ms Mitchell.

It’s been almost two years since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Nearly 3.7 million people are internally displaced in Ukraine, while more than 6.2 million refugees from the country have been recorded globally.

“The world’s focus has shifted to other emergencies around the globe in recent months, but we must not forget the people of Ukraine,” Ms Mitchell said.

“There is no end to the war in sight and people still desperately need our help. I encourage Australians to support Ukrainians during the coldest and darkest months of the year.”

The race for all humans: Australian Red Cross calling on Aussies this March

Australian Red Cross is calling on you to be a champion for humanity this March. At any time during the month, The Human Race asks participants to run, ride, relay, roll or even row for their fellow human. Australian Red Cross Chief Funding Officer, Jason Laufer, said The Human Race, in its second year, is a campaign designed to give Australians the opportunity to show their support and do their bit for those less fortunate. “Unlike most other fun runs or walks we’re not asking people to compete against each other or even squeeze all their activity into one day.…

Less than 8 cents in every dollar of tax revenue collected in G20 countries comes from taxes on wealth, says Oxfam

A “war on fair taxation” has seen tax rates on the wealth and income of the richest collapse. For every $1 raised in tax in G20 countries, less than 8 cents comes from taxes on wealth. The top 1 percent of earners in G20 countries have seen the top tax rates on their income fall by roughly a third in recent decades, while their share of national income has increased by 45 percent. A modest wealth tax of up to 5 percent on the G20’s richest individuals could bring in nearly $1.5 trillion a year. Less than eight cents in…

“Golden time” seasonal farming production destroyed and lost in northern Gaza amid mounting fears of worsening hunger and starvation

Gaza farmers’ two-month-long “golden time” of agricultural production has been destroyed by Israel’s military bombing and sealing of northern Gaza, ruining the enclave’s richest farmlands which are one of its biggest sources of fruit and vegetables. With Israel’s actions also severely restricting humanitarian aid, the loss of local agricultural production is worsening malnutrition and hunger, leading to starvation and fears of worst to come for the 300,000 people estimated still now living in northern Gaza. “The risk of genocide is increasing in northern Gaza because the Government of Israel is ignoring one of the key provisions of the International Court…
