Engineers Australia welcomes appointment of new ACT Chief Engineer

Engineers Australia < 1 mins read

Engineers Australia has welcomed the appointment of Gillian Geraghty as the ACT Government’s New Chief Engineer.

CEO Romilly Madew AO said Ms Geraghty is well placed to lead the territory’s engineering future.

“As Director-General of Major Projects Canberra and an Engineers Australia Fellow with decades’ experience working on complex infrastructure projects and community programs, Gillian Geraghty is the perfect successor to Adrian Piani.”

Ms Madew also praised the announcement of a new Board of Engineering Excellence which will provide engineering advice and advocacy directly to the ACT Government through Ms Gerahty’s office.

“The creation of the Board of Engineering Excellence marks a significant step in the collaboration between the Government and the private sector. This partnership will enable us to offer forward-looking guidance on crucial matters and challenges related to engineering.”

The title of ACT Chief Engineer will remain within the ACT Government.

Ms Geraghty’s appointment follows the resignation of Adrian Piani after almost five years as the Territory’s inaugural Chief Engineer.

“Engineers Australia thanks Adrian for his many achievements over the past five years and we look forward to supporting Gillian in her new role and working together to achieve outstanding outcomes for the Territory and its community,” Ms Madew said.

Ends.

Redefine What Productivity Is to Improve It Says the Institution of Civil Engineers

Thursday, 5 December 2024 The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has today published a report, How Can Infrastructure Delivery Productivity In Australia Be Improved? The report’s findings follow a green paper and consultation that gathered input from the ICE’s civil engineering experts and partners in Australia and the UK. The ICE says productivity improvements are critical to delivering the infrastructure Australia needs to support its growing population, particularly as many projects are currently over budget and over schedule. “There is a broad understanding that design and construction practices in Australia are inefficient, but existing approaches to measuring and reporting on…

‘A million times better’: how frequency combs could provide a quantum leap for Satellite Network Synchronisation

Engineers at UNSW say exciting new developments in the way optical clocks can be synchronised has the potential to radically change global positioning systems – as well as fundamental cosmological theories. Satellites in space need to synchronise very precisely in order for communications to proceed efficiently. Synchronisation also allows the time taken for signals to be sent across a network to be calculated, which then allows positioning to be determined. Currently global positioning is accurate in most circumstances to within about 1 metre, but if the timing of signals is miscalculated by just 1 nanosecond the error would be a…
