LEUNIG THE POET – the artist’s biggest and most diverse exhibition celebrates the Adelaide Fringe Festival

On Now until March 17, 2024 / Free Event at Art Images Gallery, 32 The Parade, Norwood.

Art Images Gallery at Norwood is proud to present an exhibition of thought-provoking works by renowned Australian cartoonist and artist, Michael Leunig.

Showcasing original paintings, hand-written poems, pen-and-ink drawings, etchings and prints, this exhibition is a celebration of imagination, satire, and the exploration of the human experience.

Michael Leunig is not simply adored by the arts world, he’s been crowned as an Australian National Living Treasure. This exhibition is his biggest and most diverse exhibition to date, as part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2024. This is a rare opportunity for the public to view this major collection of original artworks in person in the expansive space of the Art Images gallery.

Leunig is arguably the most celebrated newspaper cartoonist Australia has ever produced. Through his quirky line drawings, he provides pertinent commentary not only on current affairs, but also the human condition. He marries the pithy with the wistful, as media commentator Philip Adams notes, Leunig has “weaponised whimsy”.

His idiosyncratic imagery comes in all shapes and sizes, depending on the meanderings of his imagination. His paintings are prized, as are his words: Leunig is a poet. Ditties and doggerel spring forth for all occasions, some being comical, some melancholy and some provocative.

Others simply mirror moments in life. His works continue to resonate across the generations. Since Leunig inks his words in a sophisticated child-like text familiar to his cartoons, one may define this body of work as “poetic art”.

The exhibition includes paintings, hand-written poems, works on paper, etchings, and prints.
