RACGP ready to welcome and unite GP training in Queensland

Royal Australian College of GPs 2 mins read

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) is ready to welcome and unite GP training in Queensland following James Cook University’s (JCU) announcement it will transition away from GP training delivery in 2024.

While the timing and finer details of the transition will be confirmed at an appropriate time, both organisations remain committed to a seamless transition.

RACGP President Dr Nicole Higgins said: “Registrars, supervisors and practice managers engaged in GP training are always our priority.

“Following the successful transition of eight training organisations to the RACGP in February last year, the College leadership, operations and systems are well prepared for the seamless transition of delivery in the North West Queensland footprint.

“Practices and registrars in North West Queensland are already using RACGP systems which will provide a seamless experience and limited change for most.

“The RACGP’s nationally consistent, regionally supported and locally delivered GP training program has been built to support every community and we look forward to continuing this work across Queensland.

“This change will enable the RACGP to optimise training program opportunities within the state.

“As a long-term GP training practice owner and supervisor in North West Queensland, I would like to take this opportunity to thank JCU for their stewardship of the program.

“I’m looking forward to bringing North West Queensland into alignment with the rest of the country to deliver a nationally consistent, regionally supported and locally delivered GP training program.

“GPs in training are our future doctors who care for communities Australia-wide and it’s critical that they are supported.”

‘Fantastic milestone’ for 88 new specialist GPs in South Australia

The Royal Australian College of GPs will welcome 88 new fellows as specialist GPs in South Australia at a ceremony on Saturday 19 October, which will also celebrate the state’s annual RACGP Award winners. The new GPs attending the event in Adelaide Town Hall will include eight rural generalists – GPs who’ve completed Additional Rural Skills Training in fields such as anaesthesia and obstetrics. Fellowship of the RACGP (FRACGP) reflects a doctor’s qualification and expertise as a specialist GP and is the culmination of around 11 years of education, training, rigorous assessment, and experience in primary care. RACGP President Dr…

ACT Labor’s proposed walk-in centres expansion leaves cost and care questions unanswered: RACGP

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has reiterated its call for the next ACT government to commit to an independent evaluation of the ACT nurse-led walk-in centres. With ACT Labor announcing an expansion of centres which are reportedly bleeding taxpayers’ money, ahead of this Saturday’s election, the RACGP also gave its assessment of parties’ primary care policies. An independent evaluation of the centres has been a core pillar of the RACGP’s ACT election platform since before a Canberra Times investigation revealed health officials had “buried” $10 million in expenses. Emails obtained under a Canberra Times freedom of information request…
