WHAT: Liverpool West Public School is reopening after the completion of remediation works to remove contaminated mulch.

Students and staff at Liverpool West Public School will be welcomed back to their classrooms on Monday, 11 March 2024 after full clearance was received from the independent hygienist. 

This follows extensive work undertaken over the past few weeks to remove contaminated mulch at the school and fully remediate the site. 

Students have been able to continue their learning at Gulyangarri Public School during this time. 

More than 2,500 tonnes of potentially contaminated material has been removed under the guidance of the hygienist in line with Work Health & Safety legislation. 

All areas of concern based on the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) investigation have been remediated with all mulch now removed. 

The main classrooms and teaching areas of the school will return to usual operations. 

Reinstatement of landscaping materials will continue in the coming weeks and will not impact school operations.

Central Coast Council has been ordered to pay a total of $418,562 by the Land and Environment Court for failing to maintain a sewage pipeline which caused a significant water pollution event inNarara Creek near Gosford in April 2023. EPA COMMENCES PROSECUTIONS AGAINST THREE COMPANIES IN RESPONSE TO ASBESTOS IN MULCH INVESTIGATION

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has commenced a suite of prosecutions against three companies and one individual in response to its asbestos in mulch investigation. The prosecutions follow the largest investigation in the EPA’s history which was launched after bonded asbestos was discovered in mulch at Rozelle Parklands. During the investigation over 300 sites were inspected, with 79 sites identified as having used contaminated mulch. All 79 sites have now been cleaned up by owners. VEOLIA LANDFILL FINED FOR FAILING TO MANAGE LEACHATE LEVELS

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has issued a $30,000 fine to Veolia for failing to adequately manage leachate levels at its Newline Road landfill in Raymond Terrace near Newcastle. The EPA found that Veolia has not complied with requests to progressively cap, or seal, the landfill, a crucial measure to prevent the rainwater getting into the waste stored on site. This failure has led to increased volumes of leachate, a wastewater generated by landfill operations, creating a potential risk to groundwater, nearby wetlands and the Williams River.
