Expanding the role of nurses in child protection
The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) is convening its seventh annual Policy Summit at the National Convention Centre, Canberra, this Friday, 15 March 2024.
Titled ‘Our Youth, Our Future’, this year’s Policy Summit will highlight the many factors that impact on child and youth health and keeping children safe.
ACN CEO, Adjunct Professor Kylie Ward FACN, who will MC the Summit, said that speakers and participants will discuss issues such as climate change, intergenerational equity, public health measures, children and young people at risk, keeping children safe, socialised models of health care, mental health, trauma-informed care, and the role of nursing in child protection and care.
“We want to set an agenda for expanding the role of nursing and nurses in child protection and keeping our children safe into the future – their future,” Adjunct Professor Ward said.
“This will cover the work of nurses in child at risk services and the need for funded clinical supervision.
“We want more nurses to have the ability to recognise risk, prevent harm, be at the frontline of disclosures, and provide trauma-informed care. Nurses already play a key role in child protection. We need to expand that role.”
