Australian Red Cross thanks Queensland volunteers after a record response to emergencies

Australian Red Cross < 1 mins read

On Tuesday 30 April, Australian Red Cross is holding an event in recognition of its Queensland volunteers after they responded to emergencies for a record 130 days straight this summer.

Over the summer months, Australin Red Cross supported 35,670 people in Queensland in over 87 locations, more than 12,000 of these people in response to Tropical Cyclone Jasper alone.

Australian Red Cross State Director Garry Page said the summer just gone has been extremely challenging for many across Australia.

Queensland has been hit the hardest, with fires, storms, floods and collective trauma events seeing our volunteers responding to emergencies for a total of 137 days – equating to 30,363 hours of support,” he said.

“Australian Red Cross is always there for communities, with our volunteers and staff deployed nationwide to support individuals to cope with and manage the psychosocial impacts of these types of emergencies.

“Our amazing volunteer network is made up of a diverse range of people, who come from many cultural backgrounds, speak dozens of languages and bring a wide array of skills and experience.

“We look forward to bringing together over 90 Australian Red Cross volunteers and staff at City Hall in Brisbane tomorrow to celebrate the impact they have had helping people before, during, and after disasters.”
