UGL, a member of the CIMIC Group, has been awarded a contract, in joint venture with ADCO, to construct new railcar maintenance facilities at Bellevue, Western Australia (WA), for the State’s Public Transport Authority.

The project expands the existing Bellevue Railcar Manufacturing and Maintenance Facility and is expected to generate revenue of more than $110 million for UGL.

UGL will provide the project’s civil works, track construction, signalling and trackside equipment installation, electrification works and connection to the site’s existing High Voltage Traction Power substation.

CIMIC Group Executive Chairman Juan Santamaria said: “The Bellevue facility embeds local railcar manufacturing, testing and maintenance in Western Australia. It is key to expanding the State’s rail network, and building local jobs and skills that will support future growth. We are very pleased to be working with the Public Transport Authority, our partner ADCO, and contributing UGL’s extensive transport infrastructure experience.”

UGL Managing Director Doug Moss said: “UGL is a leader in Australian transport and infrastructure. This project will bring together the best of our capabilities to ensure a quality and safe outcome for our client and for rail users across Perth.”

Works commenced in the first quarter of 2024 and are expected to finish in mid-2026.

Abolishing penalties for polluting cars locks Australians out of savings, car choice

Australians will be locked out of cleaner, cheaper-to-run cars—and miss out on up to $3,000 a year in savings—if penalties are scrapped for car manufacturers that fail to meet pollution reduction targets under the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES).Without penalties, manufacturers have no incentive to bring the most modern—and cost-saving—vehicles to our shores. It will mean fewer affordable EVs and efficient petrol/hybrid cars, less price competition, and less options for Australians to access those savings.Reports today indicate that fines could be abolished for car companies that bring in expensive and polluting cars into Australia. This will hurt millions of motorists…

The Coalition’s climate car crash policy for higher pollution and higher petrol costs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WEDNESDAY 2 APRIL 2025 The Coalition’s climate car crash policy for higher pollution and higher petrol costs Opposition Leader Peter Dutton is set to send another wrecking ball through Australia’s hard won, sensible climate policies, with reports indicating he plans to destroy the New Vehicle Efficiency Standards. Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie said: “Before these standards, Australia had become a dumping ground for the dirtiest vehicles in the world - with the cars the US, China and Europe reject landing in our driveways. On average, new passenger cars in Australia use 20% more fuel than in the…
