Hundreds gather in Darwin for preventive health success stories

The latest preventive health research into fields like vaping and tobacco control, Indigenous health, school canteen food, climate change, and maternal health are on the agenda at Preventive Health Conference which begins in Darwin today.

More than 360 experts will gather at the Darwin Convention Centre for the three-day annual event which is hosted by the peak body Public Health Association of Australia.

Highlights include an oration by Dr Donna Ah Chee, the CEO of the Central Australian Aboriginal Congress on Thursday afternoon. Dr Ah Chee’s lecture is entitled ‘The politics of prevention: Aboriginal community-controlled health services from self-determination to post-Referendum.’

The program includes plenary sessions on community collaborations, nutrition and physical activity, and preventing the health impacts of climate change.

RACGP applauds RSV vaccine rollout in South Australia

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has welcomed the South Australian Government rolling out an RSV immunisation program for at risk infants. The program will see two vaccines to protect South Australian babies — a federally-funded one for pregnant women which protects babies from birth, and a state-funded one for infants whose mothers did not get the maternal vaccine.
