LinkedIn reveals Australia’s Top Companies for career growth in 2024

LinkedIn has unveiled its 8th annual Top Companies List – a data-backed ranking of the 25 best employers to grow a career in Australia right now. 

Fuelled by unique LinkedIn data, the methodology looks at different aspects of career progression like how employees are getting promoted, adding new skills, gender diversity and more.

This year’s list has seen Commonwealth Bank take out the top spot, with Canva making its debut at number nine – the first time the online design and visual communication platform has moved from the top startup companies list. Please note that the companies aren’t aware where they’ve placed on the list until released by LinkedIn.

Cayla Dengate, LinkedIn Career Expert and Senior News Editor, said: "This year’s Top Companies demonstrate that investing in the employee experience is vital in today’s employment landscape.

Taking out the top spot in LinkedIn’s top 25 companies, Commonwealth Bank Head of Talent Acquisition, John Hancock, said: "What sets CommBank apart is its commitment to building a brighter future for all, including our nearly 48,000 people. Canva’s Global Head of People Jennie Rogerson stated that the company is widening the pool for candidates, saying “In order to empower the world to design, we believe in the importance of having a team who represent our users around the world. To do this, we aim to hire the best from a diversity of perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds across industries. 

“We’ve designed our hiring processes around this, including removing degree requirements from our jobs, and using an interviewing approach grounded in transferrable skills from any industry you come from. As someone who has come from hospitality into tech, I have a lot of empathy for how hard the jump can be. My advice would be to focus efforts on the challenges you’d like to help solve, and getting clear on articulating the skills you have and what this means for the resulting impact you can offer.

  • Make your profile more discoverable on LinkedIn: Your Profile is like your virtual handshake, and a great way for recruiters/companies to discover you on LinkedIn. It’s also often the first place hiring managers turn to when looking to learn more about you and your experience, and is your opportunity to really show off who you are, to shine and tell your professional story. And pro-tip, you can use new AI-powered Premium tools to help you get started in crafting the Headline and About sections of your Profile.


  • Signal interest in working for a company: You can privately express interest in working for a company without having to apply for a specific role, and even if there are no open roles at the company, using the I’m interested feature. Once you signal that you’re interested, recruiters at the company will be able to view your profile when searching for interested candidates. LinkedIn’s Top Choice premium feature can also help you signal to recruiters that they have strong interest in a role they posted.


  • Find out about the company: The first place to best understand the culture, values and vision of a company before meeting mutual contacts or entering its doors, is on LinkedIn. Check out the company’s page on the platform, follow executives to understand what topics they are passionate about and if they resonate with you. Gleaning such insights is useful should you land an interview with the company. LinkedIn Premium also offers several features for professionals to further increase visibility, learn insights, and find suitable job matches.


  • Build a network with employees at the company: It is valuable to connect with those working in the company that you are interested in, whether current or former employees. See if you have any connections with the organisation, and if you can establish a relationship and even ask for a referral - on LinkedIn, applicants are 4X more likely to get hired through their network.


  • Highlight and build your skills; Skills-based hiring is growing as a focus for recruiters, with the increased adoption of AI at work. Highlight valuable skills like problem-solving abilities, communications or AI in your resumes and in interviews, to demonstrate the value you can add.
