Central Coast Council has been ordered to pay a total of $418,562 by the Land and Environment Court for failing to maintain a sewage pipeline which caused a significant water pollution event inNarara Creek near Gosford in April 2023. The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has commenced a suite of prosecutions against three companies and one individual in response to its asbestos in mulch investigation. The prosecutions follow the largest investigation in the EPA’s history which was launched after bonded asbestos was discovered in mulch at Rozelle Parklands. During the investigation over 300 sites were inspected, with 79 sites identified as having used contaminated mulch. All 79 sites have now been cleaned up by owners. The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has issued a $30,000 fine to Veolia for failing to adequately manage leachate levels at its Newline Road landfill in Raymond Terrace near Newcastle. The EPA found that Veolia has not complied with requests to progressively cap, or seal, the landfill, a crucial measure to prevent the rainwater getting into the waste stored on site. This failure has led to increased volumes of leachate, a wastewater generated by landfill operations, creating a potential risk to groundwater, nearby wetlands and the Williams River.
