Salvos Stores to open 400th store on “World’s Coolest Street”

The Salvation Army’s retail operation, Salvos Stores, will open its 400th store on vibrant High Street in Northcote, Melbourne on Tuesday, April 30. This is the 11th new store this year, with plans to open an additional 25-plus stores by the end of 2024.

Salvos Stores raised more than $44 million through sales in 2023 to directly support The Salvation Army’s network of more than 2,000 community programs and services around Australia.

Since its humble beginnings in the 1880s, Salvos Stores have continuously evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of customers while staying true to their mission of helping people in need. Over the years, Salvos Stores have provided Australians with a diverse range of pre-loved treasures, from clothing and accessories to household items and furniture, all at accessible prices.

“We're absolutely thrilled to celebrate the opening of our 400th store in Australia,” Salvos Stores National Director Matt Davis said. “As we continue to expand our network across the country, we trust we can continue to offer local communities a great place to shop, donate and connect, all while making a difference to people and the planet.”

Salvos Stores have been enabling reuse throughout Australia for more than 130 years. In the last year alone, the Australian community has helped Salvos Stores divert over 42 million items from landfill, which translates to a reduction of 583,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.*

Now with 400 retail stores nationwide and an online store that lists thousands of new items every day, Salvos Stores remain committed to providing great value, environmentally friendly products to communities right around Australia.

"Our customers play a vital role in the circular economy, which is one of the many reasons why Salvos Stores believes in keeping the community at the forefront of everything we do," Mr Davis said. “Their contributions not only benefit the environment but also enable us to fund essential community programs that make a real difference in people's lives. We look forward to welcoming the community to our newest store to celebrate this incredible milestone together!”

Earlier this year, Time Out named High Street the “Coolest Street in the World” for its trendy fashion, cafes and boutique stores, making it the perfect location to establish a Salvos Store.

Salvos Stores in High Street, Northcote will open its doors to the community on Tuesday, April 30 at 9.30am.

Oxfam reaction to the Rio de Janeiro G20 Ministerial Declaration on International Tax Cooperation: “this is serious global progress”

Responding to the Rio de Janeiro G20 Ministerial Declaration on International Tax Cooperation published today, Oxfam International’s Tax Policy Lead Susana Ruiz, said: "This is serious global progress —for the first time in history, the world’s largest economies have agreed to cooperate to tax the ultra-rich. Finally, the richest people are being told they can't game the tax system or avoid paying their fair share. "Governments have for too long been complicit in helping the ultra-rich pay little or zero tax. Massive fortunes afford the world’s ultra-rich outsized influence and power, which they wield to shield, stash and supersize their wealth,…
