Callide Power Station workers call for transparency around explosion cause before restarting unit

Workers are seeking a clear explanation of what caused an explosion at Callide Power Station's C4 unit before they bring the affected unit back online in June, the Mining and Energy Union said.

Queensland District President, Mitch Hughes said it was a miracle no one was killed or seriously injured in the 2021 explosion.

Forensic engineer, Sean Brady was commissioned to write the report in June 2021 and the MEU said the report was long overdue and should be completed and released.

"Workers are simply asking that the forensic report that they were promised by CS Energy and the Government be completed in order to provide an explanation about what occurred before restarting the unit,” said Mr Hughes.

“Workers aren’t impressed by the excuses and technicalities surrounding the release of the report, they just want transparency about what it has found about the cause of the explosion.

“It’s been nearly three years since the explosion, and frankly the company needs to finalise the report and release it if they want to build trust with the workforce and share what was found.”

Mr Hughes said that while workers awaited the completion of the long-awaited report, they remained concerned about ongoing maintenance of the Power Station.

“With the Queensland Government planning to phase out state-owned coal-fired power stations by 2035, this must not be seen as an invitation to neglect them and run them into the ground.

“Some workers don’t feel confident that the company is taking the proper precautions to ensure they can safely operate all areas of Callide Power Station.

“At Callide we have seen successive failures since the 2021 explosion, including the collapse of the C3 cooling tower in 2022 which took the station offline for hours.

“Our members are simply asking to understand what caused the explosion in 2021, so they can be assured that the C4 unit can be brought back online safely.”

Same Job, Same Pay laws delivering more than expected: new research

New research by the McKell Institute has found that the Albanese Government’s Same Job, Same Pay laws have been driving significant wage gains across the Australian economy and creating long-term benefits worth billions. The McKell Institute report, Closing Loopholes, Opening Opportunities, finds that the economic impact of closing the so-called “labour hire loophole” has been substantially underestimated, with real-world wage increases already outstripping government forecasts. “Same Job, Same Pay was designed to restore fairness to Australian workplaces. This report shows it is doing exactly that – and on a far greater scale than many expected,” said McKell Institute CEO Edward…

Parents for Climate applauds bipartisanship on cost-saving home electrification – now where’s the action?

April 2, 2025 Advocacy group Parents for Climate applauds the Economics References Senate Committee report into residential electrification this week and calls for parties across the spectrum to back in the report’s findings with strong election commitments. Parents for Climate CEONic Seton said he was pleased to see bipartisan agreement on the benefits of home electrification and now calls on the major parties to support what has long been understood by experts: electrification is the best and quickest way to permanently bring down power bills. “Our research over several years has shown the potentially dramatic cost-savings that home electrification can…

Rewiring welcomes Senate committee’s report into residential electrification

Rewiring welcomes Senate committee’s report into residential electrification A Coalition-led Senate committee has released its final report into residential electrification, recognising the increasing importance of household electrification for Australians. The committee’s inquiry, which was chaired by the Coalition’s Andrew Bragg, found electrification has the potential to improve household energy efficiency and reduce emissions. The report includes research from Rewiring Australia, which has consistently found households can save money on bills by switching from gas appliances and systems to electric ones. “This report is exciting because it suggests the Coalition understands the potential of electrification in helping households trying to weather…
