Classrooms, evacuation centres, and social outings: the roles of Australian Red Cross volunteers

Australian Red Cross 2 mins read

Today, the start of National Volunteer Week, Australian Red Cross is celebrating the dedication of its 16,000 members and volunteers.

Australian Red Cross Interim CEO Penny Harrison said the organisation is incredibly proud of the role its members and volunteers play tirelessly supporting their communities right across the country.

“From their efforts before, during, and after disasters, to knitting trauma teddies to bring comfort in difficult times, our volunteers are at the heart of all Australian Red Cross programs and activities,” she said.

Australian Red Cross volunteer and retired schoolteacher Mary Elton has proudly volunteered for the organisation since 2008. Her volunteer work has seen her deliver everything from disaster preparedness programs to and emergency services support.

Currently Mary champions Australian Red Cross’ Pillowcase Workshops, which help children prepare for, cope with, and respond to emergencies.

“The Pillowcase Workshop helps give young ones some ownership and responsibility to play a part in helping their family in emergencies,” Mary said.

Tasmanian Donna Moss has spent a lifetime serving her local community including 12 years as an Australian Red Cross volunteer.

Based in Hobart, Donna started as an Australian Red Cross volunteer by providing administrative support in the Australian Red Cross offices. Now she’s frontline and volunteers with Australian Red Cross’ Transport Service, providing door-to-door travel for vulnerable members of the community to attend non-emergency medical appointments and social outings.

It’s about more than transport – it’s about community. Sure, I take people from A to B – but along the way you make friendships, supporting people’s independence and helping reduce loneliness. That’s what’s so special about Australian Red Cross programs.”
