Media alert: Pacific climate demonstration outside Australian Parliament

350.org < 1 mins read

Pacific climate activists will hold a demonstration outside the Australian Parliament, demanding a stronger consideration of Pacific priorities in federal climate policy. As the nation prepares for next year’s elections and the potential COP31 presidency, the Pacific Climate Warriors are calling for genuine climate leadership from the Australian government.

This demonstration concludes a week of action across Australia dubbed Rise Up, as Australian people demand more ambitious climate commitments in the lead up to federal elections and COP31.

Joseph Sikulu, 350.org Pacific Managing Director says,

“We consider Australia our home and a neighbour to many of our island nations, and it’s time that the Australian government live up to that relationship. Next year we head to the polls to decide the future of Australia, and with that we potentially decide the future of the Pacific.

Australia’s bid for COP31 has the potential to spotlight the country as a leader of the renewable energy build. But we need to make sure we don’t leave any communities behind and that the energy transition happens swiftly and equitably. When the fossil phase out happens, and it must happen, it needs to be replaced with safe, clean and fair renewable energy for all communities.”

Stricter controls to address climate change in planning decisions

Climate change will be at the forefront of the NSW planning process to help meet the state’s net zero targets, under new requirements and guidance released today for public feedback. For the first time, proponents of large-emitting projects must provide robust and consistent information about their potential greenhouse gas emissions, to align with net zero targets and legislation to better inform planning decisions. This includes developments heavily reliant on fossil fuels and non-renewable electricity, or that have the potential to release large quantities of methane gas, such as coal mines, landfills, chemical manufacturers, cement and metal producers, and waste management…

CFMEU calls on Chris Minns to reverse MP’s sacking

The construction union has hit out at NSW Premier Chris Minns’ decision to sack Labor MP Anthony D’Adam from his role as a parliamentary secretary. Mr D’Adam stood up for civil liberties when raising concerns about the approach of NSW Police’s Public Order and Riot Squad at a peaceful pro-Palestine protest he attended. The Construction Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU) has written to Mr Minns, asking him to reverse his decision in the interest of upholding democratic principles around the right to protest. CFMEU NSW Secretary Darren Greenfield: “Anthony D’Adam has every right to reflect on what he saw…
