New Convention and Exhibition Centre mooted for NSW North Coast

Destination North Coast 2 mins read

Investor and Stakeholder briefing to be held June 4

Friday, May 31, 2024: A North Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre would generate up to $303M in economic activity and create more than 270 jobs, according to the findings of a feasibility study commissioned by Destination North Coast.

“There is plenty of demand and currently no existing business event infrastructure of this scale between the Gold Coast and Newcastle,” said Michael Thurston, General Manager of Destination North Coast.

The feasibility study identified four potential locations for the centre - two in Coffs Harbour (one owned by council and one privately held) and one each in Ballina (council-owned) and Port Macquarie (council-owned).

Potential investors and other stakeholders will be briefed on the findings via an online panel session next week to be chaired by Destination North Coast Chairman, John O’Neill, who will be joined by:

  • Study author, Urbis Director David Wilcox;
  • Industry representative body Meetings & Events Australia’s CEO Peter McDonald;
  • professional conference organiser Abercrombie Management Commercial Director, Nikki Abercrombie; and
  • Destination NSW’s Associate Director, Regional Conferencing, Mitch Gunn.

“As well as providing an overview of the report, the panel will discuss the strength of regional conferencing post-COVID, the value of business events, and what a new North Coast facility would enable in terms of growth in the visitor economy, “ said Mr O’Neill.

The study, funded by the NSW Government, included an audit of existing infrastructure and market potential, case study analysis of comparative infrastructure and a review and detailed cost benefit analysis of potential sites.
