TAMWORTH EMPLOYERS AND HEALTH AND SAFETY REPS INVITED TO CONSULTATION

SafeWork NSW 2 mins read

SafeWork NSW is inviting Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs), Work Health and Safety committee members and other workers, employers and those interested to come along to their free forum in Tamworth tomorrow (Tuesday 21 May) at The Mercure from 9am to 1pm to learn more about consultation at the workplace.

SafeWork’s event will give practical tips on how to undertake effective consultation at work, raise and resolve issues and learn how to manage some of the top workplace hazards such as falls, forklifts, electrical issues, bullying, and violence.

The forums are open to all industries and provide a program focusing on the fundamental requirements of workplace consultation and addressing key harms. These forums are being delivered in regional areas to give the opportunity for country workers to participate, network and receive the latest information from SafeWork NSW.

Consultation representatives including HSRs are elected to represent workers on health and safety matters and have responsibilities under WHS legislation, playing a pivotal role in gathering information about what the health and safety issues are for their work group.

These sessions will explore how a business can support the role of the HSR by having an ongoing dialogue about health and safety issues and give them access to information relating to the hazards and risks of the working group.

Numbers are limited so get in early and book your spot.

For more information and how to register for these events visit https://www.safework.nsw.gov.au/events

Quotes to be attributed to Head of SafeWork NSW Trent Curtin:

“It is a requirement of the New South Wales Work Health and Safety legislation that persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) must consult with their workers who may be directly affected by a health and safety matter.

“Businesses are strongly encouraged to send their workers along. Supporting your staff to attend these important events demonstrates to your workforce your commitment to keeping your workers safe.

“Health and Safety Representatives play a critical role in identifying and raising workplace risks on behalf of their work group, a process which creates an open and positive safety culture.

“These forums are being delivered in regional areas like the New England so they are accessible to our regional workforces to participate, network and receive the latest information from SafeWork NSW to help them meet their obligations.”

New report: Hundreds of Pacific workers in Australia would never report mistreatment

However, elements of its highly regulated structure have had the unintended consequences of leaving participants open to exploitation without realistic avenues for redress. These are the disturbing findings of a new survey of 370 PALM scheme workers conducted by the Migrant Justice Institute – a national research and policy organisation supported by University of…
