Victorian Landcare Facilitators and Coordinators miss out in budget

Landcare Victoria Inc. has expressed disappointment that despite playing a critical role
tackling biodiversity loss and climate change, today’s Victorian budget provides no new
funding for Landcare Facilitators and Regional Landcare Coordinators.

Landcare Victoria Inc. Chair Jane Carney said she felt let down.

“Eighty Facilitators and 10 Coordinators harness the power of more than 600 groups and tens of thousands of volunteers across the state, but right now they are under resourced and lack job security,” Mrs Carney said.

“With their contracts due to end in June next year, we’re going to struggle to hold onto these incredible leaders, who have an increasingly important role to play as governments wind back extension support and ratchet up biodiversity and climate commitments.”

In June 2023 the Victorian Government announced an $8.2 million investment in extending the roles of 80 part-time Facilitators and 10 Coordinators, until 30 June 2025.

Late last year Landcare Victoria delivered a 10-year plan that set out a blueprint for landcare’s key role in creating biodiverse, productive and resilient Victorian landscapes.

“We urgently need funding certainty so that we can deliver on the blueprint and continue to support the Victorian Government in restoring biodiversity and tackling climate change.”

Farmers welcome more choice in new vehicle market

Friday, 17 May, 2024 Farmers for Climate Action has welcomed the greater choice of vehicles farmers will soon have, after vehicle pollution standards, applying to new vehicles only, passed the Australian Parliament. Farmers for Climate Action, which represents more than 8200 farmers across Australia, had long called for pollution standards applying to new vehicles and was pleased Australia finally abandoned the approach of having no vehicle pollution standard on new vehicles – an approach which was only shared by Russia. CEO Natalie Collard said Australian farmers would likely start to see more choice in the new vehicle market from mid-2025.…

‘Pray the gay away if you want the place’: new survey shows how older LGBTQIA+ people experience discrimination searching for housing

Melbourne, May 17: An older LGTBQIA+ person was told by a real estate agent to ‘pray the gay away’ if they wanted to find a rental, according to a new survey from Housing for the Aged Action Group. The survey, which gathered responses from 296 LGTBQIA+ people aged 40 and above, found over a third of respondents had felt discriminated against when trying to find housing. “I had one real estate agent tell me I could ‘pray the gay away’ if I wanted the place,” one respondent explained. “Lots of difficulty getting housing as lesbian mums with kids, even when…
