Call for school board to take action following historic staff strike

Independent Education Union - Queensland and Northern Territory (IEU-QNT) < 1 mins read

The Independent Education Union – Queensland and Northern Territory Branch (IEU-QNT) is calling on the Ipswich Girls Grammar School (IGGS) and Ipswich Junior Grammar School (IJGS) Board of Trustees to take the action needed to ensure quality working conditions and quality education continue at the school.

IEU-QNT organiser Andrew Elphinstone said the union had yesterday (10 June 2024) written to employer representatives and the IGGS/IJGS Board with a proposal to resolve the current negotiations.

“While IGGS/IJGS have claimed that they continue to “negotiate in good faith” – they failed to come to the last negotiation meeting on Monday, 3 June 2024 with any proposals to address key employees concerns over working conditions,” Mr Elphinstone said.

“IGGS/IJGS teachers and school support staff are seeking action on a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) payment, a new automatic step for experienced teachers and flexible access to leave.

“In our letter to the Board and the employer representatives, we have confirmed our union is open to further considerations of ways to address both the employer and employees concerns with the intent of finalising these negotiations.

“With growing support from IGGS/IJGS school parents and the community, we are calling on the Board, led by Chair Mr Phillip Bell, to take action to ensure employees’ concerns are addressed and the future of education at IGGS and IJGS is protected,” Mr Elphinstone said.
