The Australian Institute of Training and Development (AITD) is excited to announce its upcoming free event Life Ready: The Value of L&D in Supporting Marginalised Youth Into the Workforce. It will take place at the Youth Arts and Recreation Centre (YARC) in Hobart, Tasmania on Tuesday 23 July 2024.
Recent research from the Australian Government’s Institute of Family Studies highlights the urgent need to support marginalised youth transitioning into the workforce. One in three Australians aged 24 and from the lowest socio-economic backgrounds are not in education, employment or training, compared to one in 15 from the highest socio-economic backgrounds. Young people who are not engaged in any education, training or paid employment by the age of 24 are most at risk of experiencing future long-term unemployment.
Providing early intervention support—including access to industry-specific and transferable skill development programs—can promote work-based skills and knowledge before students encounter problems finding employment.
AITD’s upcoming event Life Ready will explore these issues and more. The event is a must attend for L&D professionals, educators, and advocates committed to supporting inclusive workforce opportunities. Colony47’s CEO, Dianne Underwood, will provide expert insights based on first-hand experience helping marginalised youth back into the workforce.
Ben Campbell (CEO, AITD) underscored the importance of L&D in helping marginalised youth as they transition to the workforce. "Learning and development play a pivotal role in bridging the gap for marginalised communities as they transition to the workforce.”
"Through targeted training and skill-building programs, we can provide young people with the tools they need to overcome barriers and achieve their full potential. Life Ready is an opportunity to demonstrate the transformative power of education and training in creating equitable workforce opportunities for all. By investing in these initiatives, we are not only empowering individuals but also strengthening our communities and economy," said Ben Campbell.
According to Dianne Underwood, “Life Ready is an incredible opportunity to showcase the profound impact that learning and development can have on young people experiencing barriers to living a good life. Our team is excited to share our experiences from working within Tasmanian communities. We believe that by empowering young people with the right support, we can help them achieve health, housing, employment, and ultimately, self-sufficiency.”
