Six-month lifeline for Eraring coal deal welcome but uncertainty remains

Mining and Energy Union < 1 mins read

The Mining and Energy Union warns that workers at Myuna and Mandalong coal mines still face an uncertain future, despite a short-term deal struck between Origin Energy and Centennial Coal to keep supplying coal as part of a six-month extension.

In May, the NSW Government and Origin reached an agreement to extend the operating life of Eraring Power Station until 2027.

Northern Mining and NSW Energy District President Robin Williams said that while the MEU welcomed the announcement, workers would still find themselves in the same position in six months’ time.

“Workers are hopeful that a longer-term arrangement can be reached considering that Origin Energy have the security to operate for the next three years.

“We believe that the security afforded to Origin Energy should be shared with the coal miners whose livelihoods depend on supplying coal to the power station.

“The MEU will continue to engage with our members and Origin Energy to work towards a more long-term solution for workers.”
