ACFID response to targeted sanctions on Israeli settlers in West Bank

Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) < 1 mins read

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), the peak body for Australian humanitarian agencies welcomes the announcement from Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong to impose targeted Magnitsky-style financial sanctions and travel bans on seven Israeli individuals and an Israeli entity for involvement in settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

This announcement comes in the light of advice from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) last week that Israel’s 57-year-old military occupation of Palestinian territories is unlawful.

In line with the ICJ decision and the dire humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, ACFID calls on the Australian Government to immediately use all diplomatic tools available in its support for a ceasefire in Gaza and an end to the occupation.

ACFID calls on all parties to the conflict to abide by the rulings of the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice and ensure unhindered humanitarian access.

ACFID calls on the Australian government to consider the implications of Australians funding settler activities in the Palestinian Occupied Territories – now deemed illegal by the ICJ and assure the community that the Government is not inadvertently subsidising maintenance and expansion of illegal settlements including via tax deduction concessions to such activities.

UK Labour shows Victoria’s isolation on gas appliance bans

8 January 2025 The Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association of Australia (GAMAA) today noted the announcement yesterday by the UK Labour Government that it is dropping proposals to force households to replace gas hot water boilers with electric heaters as recognition that such draconian approaches impose high costs, and do not enjoy public support. The Starmer Government overnight announced it was scrapping a proposal to phase out gas hot water boilers in existing premises by 2035 under the UK building code which was controversially announced by the previous government. Instead, it will focus on raising energy efficiency standards and providing information…

TIBET EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS NEED HELP, NOT HARM

Tibetans and Tibet organisations around the world are deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake [1] that struck Chinese-occupied Tibet on 7 January 2025 [2]. At this critical moment, the safety and welfare of those affected by the earthquake must be given full priority. To this end, we call on world governments to provide support and oversight to all of China’s disaster relief efforts in order to ensure impacted Tibetan communities receive the required aid and assistance. They must also ensure the Chinese government does not use its earthquake response as a pretext to further its colonial policies in Tibet as…
