Brewers call for draught beer tax cut as another hike announced

Brewers Association of Australia < 1 min read

As the Government announces yet another hike in the beer tax the Brewers Association of Australia has called for the tax to be cut for beers poured in the pub.

Commenting on the increase announced today, Brewers Association CEO, John Preston, said:

“Beer drinkers are set to be slammed by yet another excise tax increase at a time when people are already struggling with the rising cost of living.

“This tax has gone up twice a year for over 30 years. We’ve now got the third highest beer tax in the world.

“We all know the benefits of people getting out and socialising with friends and family but these tax increases are making this unaffordable for Australians.

“Enough is enough. We’re calling for the Federal Government to step in and cut the rate of tax for beers served in hospitality venues back to a sensible level.

Everybody’s Home backs reported end to CGT discount

National housing campaign Everybody’s Home is encouraged by reports the Albanese Government is leaning towards scrapping the capital gains tax discount on property and returning to the pre-1999 system. Media reports today suggest Treasurer Jim Chalmers is considering returning to the original way of taxing capital gains on homes instead of reducing the current 50 per cent discount on capital gains. Everybody's Home spokesperson Maiy Azize said the move would be a turning point for housing affordability and fairness. "Scrapping the CGT discount would be one of the most positive steps any government has taken on housing in a generation,"…

Australians for Mental Health welcomes $517 million disability support program

Australians for Mental Health (AFMH) has welcomed the Federal Government’s new Disability Peer Support and Connections Program, calling the $517 million investment a meaningful step toward building the community-based mental health infrastructure Australia urgently needs. The program, now open for applications, will fund organisations to deliver peer support, capacity building and community connection for Australians with disability under the age of 65, regardless of their eligibility for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
