NEW RESEARCH PROTECTING VICTORIANS FROM POOR AIR QUALITY

Wednesday, 31 July 2024 2 mins read

The Allan Labor Government is making sure Victorians are protected from airborne infections, pollution, bushfire smoke and a changing climate with support for a new research project.

Minister for Medical Research Ben Carroll today announced Burnet Institute will deliver the Pathway to Clean Indoor Air in Victoria project.

The two-year project will engage a multi-disciplinary research consortium to evaluate indoor air quality in community spaces around the state, with a range of practical measures to improve indoor air quality set to be piloted in settings including schools, workplaces and public spaces.

Studies from the US Environmental Protection Agency have shown that poor indoor air quality is linked to lower productivity and has significant detrimental impacts on health and wellbeing, with an increase in respiratory viruses including influenza, measles, COVID-19 and whooping cough also driving the need for improved indoor air quality.

This project will help establish feasible indoor air quality performance standards and will inform government policy and public health guidance, with long-term solutions including integrating indoor air quality standards into building codes and promoting healthier indoor environments. The research project is set to be completed in 2026.

Burnet Institute is also a Foundation Partner of the world-leading Australian Institute for Infectious Disease, which is made possible by the Labor Government’s $400 million investment.

The Government’s investment of more than $1 billion in health and medical research over the last decade continues to drive growth, create jobs and support incredible breakthroughs in treatment and care.

GOVERNMENT CREDIBILITY FAILS AT THE FIRST HURDLE WITH GAS BAN LAWS

31 October 2024 The Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association of Australia (GAMAA) today expressed its deep disappointment at the Victorian Government’s ramming through of the Building Legislation Amendment 2024 to give the energy minister the power to ban the installation of new or replacement gas appliances in the existing residential and commercial sectors. “Despite assuring Victorians the government would not touch their gas cooktops, less than three days later they introduced laws that would give them the power to do exactly that,” said GAMAA president Ross Jamieson. “And now they have pushed it through Parliament, voting down an amendment that would…

The Victorian Small Business Commission (VSBC) Annual Report 2023-24, tabled in parliament today, disclosed that 64 applications were made for exemption certificates, a legal requirement before creditors can seek to recover a farm debt, almost triple the 24 applications received last financial year. “We assist farmers to confidentially sit down with creditors and negotiate a way forward,” Victorian Small Business Commissioner Lynda Mc-Alary Smith said. “I strongly encourage farmers experiencing financial stress to get in touch with us. 94% of mediations we held this financial year resulted in an agreement.” The Farm Debt Mediation Act 2011 requires farmers and their…

Growing number of small businesses in dispute over unpaid money: VSBC Annual Report 2023-24

Almost half (41%) of dispute resolution applications to the Victorian Small Business Commission (VSBC) under the Small Business Commission Act were related to unpaid money, according to its Annual Report 2023-24, tabled in parliament today. The VSBC is an independent statutory authority tasked with preventing and resolving disputes faced by small businesses, retail tenants and their landlords. Victorian Small Business Commissioner Lynda McAlary-Smith said this was a reminder for big businesses to pay small enterprises on time. “Small businesses are impacted by late payments in a big way and they’re often in a power imbalance with larger clients, which is…
