North Sydney Council has voted to extend the 2024 winter sporting season by one week to 1 September due to prolonged wet weather conditions.
Since the start of the winter season in April this year, the North Sydney Local Government Area has been subjected to extreme amounts of rain. The exceptionally high rainfall has led to extensive periods of waterlogged turf sports fields.
This is the second season in three years in which community sport has been heavily affected due to ongoing wet weather throughout the winter season. In some cases, more games have been cancelled than have been played.
The extension demonstrates Council's commitment to supporting community sport during this challenging period.
Mayor Zoë Baker said: "North Sydney is proud to provide open spaces for local and professional sporting groups. Extending the winter sporting season is vital to address the increasing demand for recreational space and assists in accommodating full competition schedules for teams."
