Statement of Dissenting Liverpool Councillors post Extraordinary Council Meeting (held on Tuesday 22/7/2024)

The result of the Extraordinary Council Meeting is disappointing for the community of Liverpool.

The Interim Report of the Independent Investigation of the Office for Local Government raises serious concerns.

We, the dissenting Councillors, argued for Council to support the process that the Minister for Local Government has laid out.

We believe it is essential that the process of a public inquiry be supported and to proceed for the allegations to be tested and to afford people the opportunity to clear their name.

The postponement of the September council election while the public inquiry in underway is, in our view, a reasonable and sensible action that will enable our community to have confidence and trust at a future election in the integrity of Council and councillors.

Councillor Karress Rhoades
Councillor Dr Betty Green
Councillor Peter Harle

Dutton’s ‘mining towns are done’ comments alarming and offensive: MEU

Peter Dutton’s comments that coal mining towns are ‘done’ are alarming for the large number of Queenslanders who live and work in them, the Mining and Energy Union said today. Mr Dutton told 7’s Sunrise program on Friday: “If you look at any area like the Hunter or really any coal mining area, their jobs and that industry, that town is done.” Mr Dutton went on to say his proposal for nuclear power stations was the solution for future jobs in mining regions like the Bowen Basin. MEU Queensland District President Mitch Hughes said Mr Dutton’s comments showed the Opposition…
